ok so i've just came back from the dentist and i need a root canal on a top molar. I've had one done and it hurt so much, i could have punched the dentist and jumped out of the window. Let's just say i'm younger than 15, will laughing gas decrease the pain....by ALOT? ...any tips?
Root canal?
No laughing gas will not at all do anything for the pain, it will make YOU feel floaty, funny, or whatever, but it will help with anxiety before you get an injection to "numb" the area while you are getting your root canal therapy performed. You really need to have this done, but postponing it, you are making it worse in the end. Ask your dentist if he can give you a Valium b4 your appt, that will help with fears and such.....Good Luck.....you'll do great
Reply:You should ask your dentist to give you Valium before the intervention. I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed and was so nervous. After the Valium, i was on a little cloud, very mellow... hell, it's almost a good memory. Anyway, make sure you buy your painkillers BEFORE the intervention so you can take them right when he finishes. This way, you'll avoid being in pain when the anesthetic wears off.
Reply:As a patient if you feel anything tell the doctor and he can give you more anesthesia, it's your right as a patient consitering your paying him for a service and should be as comfortable as possible.
Reply:Root canals shouldn't hurt!! If the tooth is really infected at the time of the root canal, than it is VERY difficult for the tooth to become fully numb. This is not the fault of the dentist, but of the patient who let it get that bad. Laughing gas will not help with the pain, but will help you relax.
Reply:Root canals are NOT meant to be painful, if you are administered the proper drugs.
I've had 2 done and they didn't hurt at all, all you should feel is some pressure, that's it.
Before you have the surgery, talk to your dentist and come up with a signal that you would show to him when you are in pain.
(This is what I did, and when I gave my dentist the signal she'd give me a little more drug.)
