Root canal...?

i have to get one and im 13 years old...


is that normal and does it hurt...

Well i am terrified of the dentist and have had some bad experiences in the past.But the one root canal filling i had ,was the least problem of all ,i didnt feel a thing ,nor was there any pain afterwards,dont listen to all theses woozes that have answered,they are either telling porkies to scare you ,or they have a very low pain threshhold,dentists today are pretty good .
Reply:Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury.





It's normal for any age of person to need one once they have their adult teeth. Baby teeth don't have the same root/nerve system.





The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection.





Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.





At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.





The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.





A local anaesthetic is used and it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done.
Reply:It's normal to get root canals at any age. They hurt - but make sure to ask for lots of anastetic and laughing gas. That will make it a little better.

Its a normal procedure, which involves removing the nerves to the tooth. It is pretty painfull, sorry!
Reply:Not sure if it's normal---however it will hurt most afterwards, be sure they give you a painkiller like vicodin
Reply:Any aged person can get a root canal. Depending on if they put you to sleep or not depends on the pain, but yes they do hurt...a lot. A root canal is basically when they take a drill and drill down into your gums.
Reply:A root canal is basically where the roots of your tooth is infected. They will grind down the tooth and then clean out the roots. You will have a cap put on it. They can be painful or not painful. It depends on how good the dentist is. I've had both good and bad experiences. Good luck, and take better care of your teeth.
Reply:Yes its normal, you have either a big hole in a tooth or knocked your front-tooth, You will have an injection and it wont hurt, they open the tooth, clean the root-canals an fill it up with some material which doesn't allow bacterias back in. It works usually well, only setback is, it takes a while and is boring for you
Reply:I recently had one and feared the same pain as everyone is talking about. But maybe the technology has changed. I was given a good deal of anesthetic to numb the area, and I didn't really experience as much pain as I feared. I've had worse tooth fillings.
Reply:Don't let anyone scare you. It sounds worse than it is. Mine didn't hurt at all. It just felt like getting a filling, but just took a little longer. They will numb you up real good. They bascially drill a hole into the tooth and go in with a special tool that cleanes the root out and remove the root in the tooth and fill that space in with a filling. Then they will take some impression of that tooth with this goo that you bit down on and it dries pretty quick over the tooth so they can make a cast for your crown. Then they will on a temporary crown. You will then need to come back to get the new crown put on usually a few weeks later. That appointment doesn't take much time. At that appointment they take the temp crown off and cement the new crown onto that old tooth. Now if you have an infection in the tooth that needs the root canal done make sure you get rid of that infection before they do the procedure or the numbing medicine will not take affect and you will have pain. That is why some people say they have pain during the procedure is because they didn't have the infection gone before it was done and the medicine won't work if that isn't gone. I got that information from my dentist. So take any meds they give you. You will be fine. Take some soothing music and try to relax the best you can. It is over in no time and believe me you will be feeling so much better afterwards.I wish you the best.
Reply:yes its very normal. ive had a few done and it is not that sore. they freeze the tooth that they will be workin on.

You obviously have an infection within the tooth. The dentist will numb the surrounding area, remove the nerve, clean out the infection and then pack the canal with a filling before closing up the tooth. You shouldn't feel any pain during the process. They will use special serated metal rods (a bit like a metal file) to clean out the tooth and the only sensation you will feel will be a tugging as they draw the rod out.





You may get some pain after the process as the area around the tooth can suffer some bruising and trauma, but this will usually settle down within a couple of days and can be contained with painkillers.





If you continue to get pain, you will need to return to the dentist so that they can ensure the root canal filling isn't causing undue pressure to the tooth socket.





It sounds worse than it actually is, but it's a very common procedure. Ask your dentist to talk you through the process and let you know what he's doing as he performs the treatment.
