I had a root canal today because one of my molars had a cavity. It was filled and then became very sensitive to cold and pressure. It was filled and refilled 4 times. It was to the point that anything I drank had to be room temp, and that even bothered me. So I had a root canal, and I had a drink today and it still is sensitive to temp. Is it normal for the tooth to be sensitive even after the nerve is out? I thought that the root canal would make the tooth "dead". Anyways I guess my question is, does anybody know if after a root canal if it is normal for the tooth to be temp sensitive and does it go away? HELP!
Root canal pain?
The sensitivity may go away with time, but to think that the entire root system was removed is not true.
There are so many tiny "root Hairs" that it is possible that another root canal on the same tooth may be necessary if it becomes infected again. You should check you dental policy, may policies will cover the initial root canal per tooth while others will do the initial and 1 additional per tooth. That right there tells you that the roots are not always completely removed with the first go around
So...... if there are roots there can be sensitivity.
Reply:It takes one to know one.
Reply:The nerve endings around the removed tooth are still pretty sensitive because of the operation. It'll cool down in a day or two. If not, contact your dentist.
Reply:It's perfectly normal to have sensitivity afterwards, but that will soon go away. In the meantime, I'd prescribe lots of weed to take the pain away (it will mix with your pills wonderfully).
Reply:It is very normal, that happened to me, it took about 2 weeks for that discomfort to fully go away, good luck and be patient.
Reply:yes. i had one about 6 months ago and it still bothers me, maybe it will get better for both of us. good luck.
Reply:After a car accident, I've had 4 teeth done. I felt the sensation for some time....months. But it goes away. I THINK its the nerves healing....once it takes place, you'll feel nothing.
Call the dentist if you have PAIN. I use a straw to drink.
Reply:Yes that is normal for it to still be sensitive. You probably had a bad infection. A root canal is a 3 step process. You only have the temporary filling in. Next time they will give you a silver cap, then the next time they will give you a new tooth. It's pretty cool but all of it is EXTREMELY PAINFUL!!!!! Just take it easy, I find that motrin helps.
Reply:When you have a root canal done, the dentist usually puts a temporary cap or filling in the tooth for about a week because sometimes some of the pulp is still in the tooth or part of the nerve of the tooth is still exposed. If the irritation hasn't gone away by the time you go back to the dentist, make sure you tell him/her what is going on.
Reply:Sounds like he did the root canal on the wrong tooth.
Reply:I've had 5 root canals, it just takes a few days. It will feel better every day %26amp; in about 3 or 4 days it wont be sensitive anymore. If it is then you should call your Dentist.
Reply:HI
I am a dentist.Dont worry for sensitivity.
Little sensitivity is ok.Main reason is that although a tooth is nerveless n shd not feel hot n cold but sometimes there r lateral root canals which r not accessible by dentist.
This might be cause for sensitivty.Normally it will subside by natural course of time. This is also one of the main cause of failure of RCT.
I dont wanna blame but Indian dentist though not from devloped country r better in diagnosis n trtmnt.
I am usually available in this DENTAL HEALTH of yahoo ans.
I have found u people concerened on little things.Dentist must trt and most imp is he shd explain the things in satisfacoty way.
Hope I help u.

Reply:HELLO HIGGALO,
IN THE ROOT THERE ARE LATERAL (SIDE CANALS THAT ARE MINOR AND SMALL UNLIKE THE MAIN CANAL), THESE LATERAL CANALS ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE BY THE DENTAL INSTRUMENTS. ROOT CANAL TREATMENT IS ABOUT 95% SUCCESSFUL. THOSE SMALL FAILURES ARE DUE MAINLY TO THOSE LATERAL CANALS. 5% SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE MUST BE USED TO ADEQUATELY CLEAN THE CANAL.
THE CANAL ONCE CLEANED, THERE WILL BE A HEALING PROCESS AND IT'S EXPECTED TO HAVE SOME LEVEL OF DISCOMFORT AFTERWARD. THIS WILL SUBSIDE.
Reply:Honestly, I just had it done Wednesday for the first time on a fractured tooth, and so far with the pain I have that is the only plus. The base of that tooth around the gum line had gotten extremely sensitive to cold and now it is gone.
They did however tell me that it's normal if things still bother me for a while, but that that should slowly diminish. So, I'd wait. In time if it never clears up though, I'd talk to them about it since they could even have missed a nerve--I read that a tooth might be able to have an extra that gets missed.
