Root canal?
first off, an endodontist is the specialist, not a periodontist. General dentist do plenty of root canals too. I do a ton every year. Your dentist should be able to anesthetize the area sufficiently enough to prevent pain during the procedure. You can take Advil or Motrin before and after. If there is no infection presently it will be easier to numb. Tooth will be sore afterwards, be sure to chew on the other side, and make sure the DDS reduces the tooth to take it out of occlusion (bite). Get a crown in a few weeks. I have info on my website: www.newtowndental.com. Good luck
Reply:If done by a periodontic specialist, only the injection hurts and pain afterward is minimal to none. IN the hands of a general dentist I have no guarantees.
Reply:it depends on how you take pain
my mom had it done and she was in bed for about a day
my dad he gets it done and he is back at work
take some tylenol right before and after..
it should help it and the dentist should give you a prescreption of 800mg ibuprofin
Reply:u wont feel it.....they numb u up pretty good.....although the shots they give to numb it...made me sick and they had to wait a little while to do the procedure....good luck
Reply:My friend I feel your pain Im going to the dentist tomorrow also. But my BFF had the same thing happen to her, she HAD to go to work afterward. She said she was ok, but you may be in too much pain to actually concentrate on work... good luck
Reply:I have had three of them. The biggest thing is it feels like they drill into your brain, drill, drill, drill, drill, and drill. You will defiantly be sore the next day. Screw the ibuprofen ask for darvaset or vicoden you wont regret it. Need to brush better.
Reply:No need to be scared. The dentist numbs the site and makes sure you can feel nothing before doing anything else. Once the injection is done, you'll feel no pain, just hear noise through your jaw as the dentist works, which can just seem "odd".
You'll even have to be careful about not eating or drinking for an hour or so afterwards just in case you bite yourself without noticing. It's normal for me to feel tingling pins'n'needles for a while when the anaesthetic wears off. If you have any complications or further discomfort, get back to the dentist so he can fix any problem.
As others mention, in the short term you might be on pain pills to manage the discomfort. If it's unmanageable, get back to the dentist.
I have a cleft palate with tight gums and scar tissue in my upper jaw, so what's uncomfortable for me is the injection itself because there's liquid being pushed into an area that doesn't want to expand. Not sure if that's normal for everyone else.
Reply:I've had many done... for the most part, the novacaine shot hurts the most. Nowadays, my dentist told me they basically chemical burn the root out. Before they drilled it out or something.
Its an awful smell, but nothing to worry about.
I take pain relatively well, so aside from a minor annoyance a time or two afterwards, it doesn't hurt.
Trust me, the worst part is being in the waiting room and hearing the drill from other rooms. The waiting is worse for than they actual procedure.
But just to be on the safe side, find a point on the ceiling and focus on it and grip the arm rest in a death grip.....incase of any sudden pain. Sometimes the novacaine isn't enough, but they usually say to raise your hand and they'll stop right away.
All in all, I've had around 5 root canals. It's more your nerves (pardon the pun) than anything. Its nothing to worry about.
And only time I got prescriptions for pain was when i got my teeth pulled....and they gave me either vicodin or hyrdocodene(generic version). So don't count on the dentist giving you pain meds.
Also, in my opinion, getting your teeth pulled is easier than root canals. I was awake, but numb, when they pulled three of mine.
Reply:in 1st day access preapered.it can hurt if infection is more.take proper antibiotics %26amp;then start RCT.it would not hurt you.
Reply:An endodontist(root canal specialist) is very efficient and any post-op pain would be minimal. You can certainly go to work afterwards. Most general dentist are also very proficient. The many recent advances in treatment are wonderful.
Reply:Please dont be scared. It is like a deep filling. You may have pain from keeping your mouth open, sometimes there is post operative pain. You should be able to work.
Reply:No, it shouldn't hurt. As with most dentistry the worst thing is getting the Novocain, and even that doesn't hurt as that put on a topical treatment first, and then give you the shots. Your mouth will be sore for a couple of days, mainly the gum area around the tooth that was worked on, but you should be fine and going to work shouldn't be a problem. Your dentist can give you some pain pills, just tell him you are real sensitive and he will give you some or prescribe some for you.
Reply:Root canals, from what I understand, are the result of decay within a given tooth that effect the nerve. In my case, I had a cavity that was really deep and even after I had a filling put in it continued to decay almost all the way to the jaw bone.
The explanation that I got from the dentist is that the nerve of my tooth had died and it needed to be removed as well as the decay and infection inside of my tooth.
Basically what he did was go inside my tooth, take all of the decay out, clean the four canals of my tooth, made a mold of my real tooth and then put a temporary cap back in my tooth. After a couple of weeks the permanent cap arrived in his office and he simply took off the temporary and replaced it with the permanent cap.
As far as the operation itself, I was given a local anestetic and I was awake through the whole thing. I felt no pain at all and I even drove home from the dentist's office.
I've had two root canal operations, one without dental insurance and one with it, and it can be very expensive. When I had it done without insurance the whole procedure, including the permanent cap, cost about $1,300. Believe me it was not fun to have to pay that but you need to have this operation done.
If you wait too long the tooth can become infected, like mine did, and it can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious complications. I waited about two and a half years before I finally had my second root canal done.

Reply:I am 1/2 way through mine. I just had work done about 3 hours ago. I have an infection so the Dentist gave me some antibiotics and Tylenol 3's. Vicoden makes me puke. All the numb-ness has worn off 100% and my tooth doesn't feel any worse than it did before all the "drilling" of the root. I am actually quite surprised. My jaw hurts where I recieved the injection and the other side from holding my mouth open. The Dentists has me coming back in a week for the rest of the procedure and then in a couple of months for a crown. I did take some motrin before my exam today because I suspected a problem. Ended up being a broken filling. Can you imagine?
Reply:I don't think your gonna want to go to work afterwards. usually you need to have someone drive you because of the medication they use before and during your surgery.
