Does root canal treatment really hurt badly?

It happened during last Fri when i started feeling pain on my upper molar which developed into fever/headache %26amp; swelling of gum. I visited GP which put me on antibiotics on Sunday, which i immediately felt much better. I visited my dentist on Tue as there was abscess in outter wall of my gum, and he said i only had 2 options - root canal or tooth implant. I guess if i can endure root canal i would want to choose this option but I have very low threshold for pain involving my teeth...

Will root canal (RC) hurt badly in my case? The antibiotics seemed to have contained majority of my infection (since i can chew now) but from xray the bacteria are still clouding my roots thus the need to treat it. The abscess remains on my gum %26amp; i can feel the pain when i press on the area. how do i get rid of it?

Will any jab hurt if it hits on this affected area? Will the RC hurts in my case? Any other recommended solution to minimize the chances of pain during RC treatment? Help pls...

Does root canal treatment really hurt badly?
since there is abscess in the tooth, the tooth is non vital %26amp; the nerve is destroved. You may not a local anestatic to do the treatment. But if you are afraid, the dentist will give you a jab. The tretament is painless.
Reply:I've had 2 done in the past (ages ago). They're never pleasant, but not too bad (if enough Novocaine). One was done, and o.k., by a long-previous dentist and he didn't put a "post" in the tooth when he filled it, so make sure that gets taken care of.......
Reply:I've had a root canal and believe me its better to get it over with than for it to keep hurting!! its actuallynot bad getting it done. They will give you novacaine and you shouldnt feel anything and it dosent hurt all that much after either. If you dont get it taken care of the infection will keep returning and thats far worse that getting a root canal!
Reply:It's not that bad. I have had several root canals. It's more uncomfortable than painful. The dentist deadens the area, but you can feel him cleaning out the root with these teeny tiny files. Doesn't hurt but feels wierd, and sounds icky. Go ahead with the root canal. You can handle it.
Reply:if given enough local anesthesia, like novacaine, you won't feel anything. as a matter of fact, once the root canal is done and the abcess is drained, you will feel better. if you feel any pain at all, let the dentist know immediately. they often can give you more novacaine.

like the previous post, make sure when you have a crown put on that there are adequate posts in position. ask to see the x-rays after the posts are put in and before the crown is put on. get them to explain everything to you, step by step. a good dentist won't mind, but will be glad to help answer your questions. gl....
Reply:you should get the root canal. i do have to say that when they clean out the roots you will feel a pinching sensation within the teeth, but that does go away. that is the most uncomfortable part about it and i felt it with all 3 of my root canals. also, eat a light snack and take some tylenol or 800 mg of motrin prior to getting your root canal done. my last root canal actually hurt very badly after it was done because there was a lot of manipulation done with the tooth and i wish i had taken some motrin prior to the root canal. it took 45 minutes for the motrin to take away my pain
Reply:I had a Root Canal last year, and the only pain I felt was the prick from the needle when the dentist numbed my jaw. After that, there was no pain even after the Novocaine wore off.
Reply:It shouldn't. The pulp chambers and/or pulp canals (which have the nerve endings responsible for sensation) are removed due to necrosis when RCT is performed.
Reply:I'm the queen of root canals and about to go for another more than likely. No, they should not hurt. If whoever is doing it correctly you should not feel pain during the procedure and only minimal tenderness after for a few weeks.
Reply:I had roots canal before for 2 molars. Get a roots canal specialist call Endodontist to do, less uncomforable and faster way to remove the roots. Not every dentist can do roots canal (but they will not tell you they can't do). The Endodontist will give you a jab before the roots canal treatment. After that they will take a tooth x-ray to check any roots still there. You can take a pain killer after the treatment. But that kind of pain is bearable for those people very scare of pain like me. I did not take any pain killer after that.
Reply:I had to have a root canal redone on the same tooth, and the endodontist was able to do it without anesthesia. It didn't hurt.

When I had it done originally, once the novocaine took effect, the discomfort was minimal. I was more uncomfortable with the first one (of four) because I was cold, so after that, I took a blanket with me. Now, my dentist offers blankets.

The only way you're going to get rid of this abscess is to have the RC. If the dentist knows how to administer novocaine, it shouldn't be much more than a pinprick.

Does your dentist offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas)? I used to be so afraid of the needle that I had to have it, but now my dentist is so gentle that I barely feel her administer the deadening. Her predecessor hurt me, even under the gas, because he'd just plunge the novocaine in. She takes it very slowly.
