Root canal?

i recently got a hit in the mouth by mistake (joke went wrong)and knocked my tooth back into my mouth, now it didnt come away from the gum and i was able to push it back to where it was but it doesnt quite sit right since and having trouble eating, i have been to a dentist who has told me the nerve is gone in the tooth and i need a root canal.

my question is are they sore, i'm going on holiday in 2 weeks so will have half done before i go and the rest when i get back as the tooth is going grey really quick. will it be ok while i'm out there cause i'll be away for 2 weeks.?

Root canal?
the best thing you can do is have the root canal before you go away. It won't improve the colour but you won't have any pain with it while you're gone. It's best to go away with it half done than with nothing started at all. It won't hurt, it doesn't feel any different from having a normal filling done, it just takes longer. You might hear the odd horror story from people but I bet they're the ones who had an RCT years ago, and things have advanced so much cince then. You'd be amazed what they can do. If you're really concerned, ask the dentist to give you a prescription for antibiotics to take with you. You probably won't need them but they'll be there if you do have any problems. Oh, and make sure you get a crown after the RCT too, cos the grey colour won't be going away.
Reply:it's reallly like that. you could take pain killers
Reply:they take the nerve out but as its gone grey the nerve must have died. you will get root treatment for a few weeks and then they pack it until the root treatment is finished and then fill it. they tell you it cant be sore as there is no nerve in it but during root treatment i did have pain
Reply:It maybe a little sore but not unbearable....They'll give you many shots to numb the area and then start removing the nerves, one root at a time. Then they will put on a temporary crown until the crown they have molded for you is done. The tempory will be fine while your away. They will prescribe a pain killer and an atibiotic to ensure the tooth doesn't get infected. I would say the most pain would be while your getting it done...It's only sore for a day or two after....You'll be eating on it in no time....
Reply:You will be ok to leave the second half of the treatment until you come back, but a word of advice - make sure you take some strong painrelief like cocodeine or coproxamol just in case and make sure you rinse your mouth after eating, to prevent any food being trapped in any gaps around the tooth which could cause a very nasty jaw infection. I would also advise you to buy a bottle of CORSIDYL mouthwash (which is available in any pharmacy. It's antibacterial and recommended by the dental assc. Hope this helps. Enjoy your holiday!
Reply:First thing to confirm with your dentist that the periodontal support for the tooth is good. Root canal therapy over that period of time is good becuase it gives time for the medicamend that we put into the canals, after they are cleaned, some time to work. Therefore when you come back from your trip you will be all set to complete your treatment. Make sure not to bite on that side because till the tooth is filled it is like an empty shell and could fracture. Blood and its by products, after being broken down, is the culprit for the discolourration of the tooth.

So basically you should be fine.

Good Luck
Reply:A word of warning. Some painkillers are illegal in some countries so check before you go.

Reply:yes there is usually gap between the treatments as they have to make the crown. dont leave it longer than yr appt tho as the gap can close up making it difficult to fit the crown. they will drill into yr tooth and make a post and apply a temporary crown. second appt will be for the real thing. nothing will stop it falling off my daughters has fallen off twice have to go back to dentist and get it glued back on. it wont go rotten as its a false tooth.
