I'm getting one tomorrow. I was wondering approximately how long does it take to recuperate? I've been invited to go somewhere on Saturday, and I was wondering if there's any chance at all that I'll be feeling well enough to join.
Root Canal?
Okay, by now you would have already had it done and over with. But I just wanted to answer this question for anyone else who might look this up.
I just had a root canal done yesterday on one of my front teeth. I can now tell you that for the most part, a root canal does NOT hurt. This was the first time I had a root canal done, and I was so completely terrified about it, but it really wasn't that bad. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. Yes, it is a little weird and uncomfortable, but it doesn't hurt. The only thing that hurts a little is the shot for the anesthetic, but they will put a gel on your gum to numb it, and if you have a really good dentist even the shot won't hurt that much. It just stings a little. You might not even feel it. The only other thing that hurt a little was when they had to leave a small instrument in my tooth for a couple of minutes to take an X-Ray, I guess to measure the depth of the canal. It didn't hurt really bad, more just irritating. But otherwise, there was no pain. I didn't even feel anything when the dentist was drilling.
If you have a toothache before the root canal, the dentist will give you a prescription for antibiotics and pain medication. You will need to take that for about a week. Be sure the infection is gone before getting the root canal or the anesthetic will not be effective. In fact, if the dentist notices any swelling, they will probably postpone the work and have you take antibiotics for a few more days. If anyone had pain during the root canal, maybe they still had an infection.
I can say a root canal was definitely not the horrifying experience I thought it was going to be. It really is like getting a filling. It just takes longer and maybe a little bit more pulling sensations. It really wasn't that bad. Uncomfortable and boring, but not painful.
As far as pain AFTER a root canal...yeah, it's a little sore, especially if I bite too hard on my front teeth. The dentist said it might hurt a little for 2 or 3 days. But it's not that bad. They gave me Ibuprofen and it works fine. So just be a little careful and eat soft foods for a while. But I just had the root canal done yesterday and I was able to go back to school and work the next day. The first night you won't feel like doing much because your mouth will still be numb for a while and then you'll be a little sore. But after that it's not too bad.
Reply:You will be fine. You will be ready to go a few hours after the procedure. Once the pain medicine wears off, you are back to normal. Good Luck!
Reply:Hard to say, depends on the dentist - I've had several root canals, and they went really smoothly - I even fell asleep during one! I've had far worse luck with deep fillings. Try to relax, chances are the doc will give you something for the pain - you may or may not need it.
Reply:you'll be fine. i wouldn't make any plans for the evening of your root canal, but if it's done right you shouldn't feel any real discomfort after you leave the dentist.
It's wisdom teeth where you take the whole weekend off!
Reply:It's completely a personal thing....people handle pain and recovery differently.
You may be up and fine and just dosed on pain pills but able to function, or you may be on the couch nauseous for a few days. Just wait it out and see.
Follow the dentist's instructions and you will get well much faster.
Hope this helps! and good luck! :-)
Reply:It takes about a week for the pain to ease down, but it sounds worse than it is. It's really not that bad, i'm sure you'll feel good enough just a little sore.
Reply:I had two done and by the second day i was good to go. it all depends on how gentle your doctor is. your paying a lot of money so tell them to properly take care of you.
Good luck, you'll be fine.
