What are the possible reasons for failed root canal treatment? Can anyone think or know why is it better to?

undergo treatment before root canal treatment?

1) I've a big cavity on my lower back molar (abt 35% broken down), and will be going for a root canal treatment and crown. Before the root canal, I was asked to undergo a treatment (probably to clean the tooth) and filling (I guess it's a temp filling) and then wait for the queue for root canal which may take up to 6 months. Why is this necessary? or is it better to undergo this treatment before root canal, and why? Will I feel the pain after the temporary filling while waiting for my turn for the root canal treatment?? If pain happens, can I say the person is not doing a good job coz the tooth is not well cleaned.

2) How can a root canal treatment failed when the tooth can be root canalled? If a root canal failed, the crowned tooth has to be extracted, how is this possible? What's the success rate for root canal?

3) What's the difference btw a crown and veneer?

Your good advice will be most appreciated. Thank you

I work for an endodontist, (root canal specialist).

Not sure what the dentist has planned for your tooth.

If you need a root canal, you need to schedule it and get it done. We do 99% of our root canals in one visit. Why do you have to wait? Does the dentist want to place a medicine in the tooth and see if the tooth comes around? Maybe it won't need a root canal after all?

A root canal can fail. Then the tooth has to be retreated, and even after retreatment you can have problems, then have to have the tooth extracted. On average I'd say that 1 out of 30 patients' root canals need retreatment.

A crown covers your entire tooth and can be placed anywhere in your mouth, and a veneer is only for your front teeth and just covers the front of the tooth. Get the tooth crowned soon after the root canal. Since the tooth can break easily after root canal therapy.

Get some more info from your dentist.
Reply:i went for a root canal some ten years ago, a small treatment for the cleaning n healing then the root canal. it took about 3 months between sittings. i did not go for a crown, took it light, found no time or interest, whatever, i didnt get it crowned. After ten years the filling on the top part has disappeared and there is a hollow now. But i feel no pain. I guess i hv to go for a crown now. The doctor says i cn go for it, it will not be a problem.. The success rate for a root canal is high.
