I had a root canal done on thursday and they are putting a crown on it this week. My question is, that tooth feels very sensitive...is that normal after having a root canal done on it? It feels kind of tender to the touch.
Root Canal question???
Yes, this is normal. I had a root canal done Thursday before last and, today is the first day that it has felt exactly back to normal. As a matter of fact, I still have a bruise on my cheek from it, but it wasn't that bad. A lot of the soreness I had was from the gum around the tooth. It was swollen before I had the root canal done just from the infection. They gave me some oral-b gum ointment that really helped with the irritaion too. Hang in there. If it doesn't get better, I would call though.
Reply:It seems a little early to cap it? Nothing about a root canal is good but if you had the crown and no root and it got bad it would be worse.
Reply:yeah it is cause i had one too nd after my tooth hurt.. it was sensitive.. im pretty sure that normal my tooth now is fine
Reply:That's going be normal. I had a root canal done a while back, it was sensitive for about a week. It will go away on its own. Your gums are sore from all the probing, trying to get the root out.
Reply:Did your dentist put you on an antibiotic after the procedure? Root canal therapy is typically performed because there is an abcess (infection) at the apex (tip) of the root. This infection will often cause pressure sensitivity. It is not unusual to experience some discomfort after the procedure, however, if you are still experiencing sensitivity when you go in for the crown it would be wise to have an x-ray to ensure there is no residual infection present. If any further treatment is required it is much easier to deal with before a permanent crown is placed. Were you given any written information on what to expect post-treatment? That is standard in the office where I assist. Also, never hesitate to call your dentist's office if you have questions. It is their job to help you. I hope everything goes well for you!
Reply:hmm...it's definitely normal for the tooth to be sore for a few days after a root canal treatment, especially right around the gum line. I've had two root canals done. The procedure itself was painless, but I was kind of sore for a while afterward. It wasn't really bad, but enough that I needed to take ibuprofen for a while. I forget what it's called, but there is a ligament under the tooth that can get irritated and slightly immflamed after a root canal treatment. So the dentist usually just puts a temporary crown on for a couple of weeks first, to let everything heal. But if you had it done Thursday, that was several days ago and you should be feeling better by now. Most likely you needed the root canal because there was already an infection. Call the dentist and explain what you're feeling. You might need to be on antibiotics a little while longer. There could still be a residual infection, or your gum might also be infected.
Best thing to do is just call the dentist. It's normal to be sore for 3 or 4 days after a root canal, but it shouldn't be that bad now.
