Root canal and crown?

Ok, I've never had this done before. It's on tooth #15. The dentist was doing filling and he said that half the tooth fell off and the cavity was probably the only thing holding it together. He referred me to an endodontist and said that I needed a root canal then a crown. I've had several friends tell me that if I had that done, that it would end up decaying under the crown in just a few years. I've already paid like $3000 to this first dentist and the specialist for the root canal is another $985. Yes I'm yet another American out here with no insurance. Please some dentists or others with this experience help me. I've never had this type of work done before and have rarely had cavities til now. Should I get this done, or just have it extracted? Thanks so much!

Root canal and crown?
Once the tooth is covered with a crown it will be fine. As long as the cavity underneath it was removed. Crowns are intended to be a permanant repair to the tooth. Occasionally one may become loose but just needs to be reattached and it is fine. Save the tooth and put on a crown, it will last.
Reply:Oh I hope your friends are wrong. I had a root canal done today and am going to have to get a crown. I think I am going to check out a dental school for the crown. I've read that they are about half the price.
Reply:yes go to a dental school 2ndly root canals are HARMFUL to your health avoid them if u can get cleanings every 6 months MIN rootcanals make bone loss and cause premature ageing in the face who wouldve guessed! also they will not rot thing is they need alot of care and attention dont have any teeth extracted the toxins are worth it to keep your teeth missing a tooth is the biggest pain you will go through for the rest of your life when they perform the rootcanal they clean the pulp out of your root canal so there is no feeling which drys out the tooth making it more likely to fracture ect so they need to put a crown on it to prevent it from breaking (have it done within a week or 2) with out crowns rootcanals are ticking timebombs! believe me i lost a tooth cause of this and i had a post sticking out of my gums for 2 days because of this and had 2 go into emergancyto have it removed and lost 2 teeth cause of this make sure u get the crown! false teeth are an enormous pain!
Reply:THIS IS A CHOICE YOU MUST MAKE. SAVING A TOOTH IS ALWAYS THE BEST CHOICE. FINANCES MAY PROVE THIS CHOICE AS AN EXPENSIVE PROPOSITION.

IF THIS TOOTH IS EXTRACTED YOU WILL NEED A BRIDGE/PARTIAL/IMPLANT TO REPLACE IT. THESE CAN ALSO BE COSTLY. OTHERWISE, MANY DIFFERENT NEGATIVE EFFECTS WILL RESULT FROM HAVING THIS KEY TOOTH ABSENT.

THIS IS A KEY TOOTH USED FOR PROPERLY CHEWING FOOD.
