Root Canal on a tooth with no pain?

Hi yahoo people :]. Heres the story; I was having severe pain ( scale of 6.5-7/10) on one of the 2nd to last tooth on the upper left side of my tooth for about 5 days straight. It would be throbbing for a minute or two waking me up in my sleep or any time Im awake, and then the next second, it would be gone. With no pain. Now, 1.5 weeks later, I feel no pain at all in that tooth. Before, I had a large filling put into that tooth and the doctor said " If you feel any pain, you may need a root canal" because the filling is kindof large. So then 6 Months later, as described above, it starts throbbing with pain on and off. Now, it does not hurt even when I bite on it hard, or when I even chew with it. They told me I need a root canal and they tested me with Endo-Ice. Im not sure if the nerve is dead, so I don't feel any pain (hopefully during the procedure since the nerve is resting in peace) but Im not sure. Is a root canal neccesary? I want a second opions please! Thanks!

yes, you need a root canal treatment.You get the pain because the opening is closed later when it opens up the pain goes.You have an infection, get the RCT done.

Reply:As long as it doesn't hurt, I would relax a bit. It wouldn't be a bad idea for a dentist to just take a peak in about 6 months just to make sure everything is ok. Chances are the nerve died, in which case, good!!!
Reply:I wouldn't do it, my new fillings were giving me pain for months and then they quit. I'd wait a while,because i have read that those things can cause infections or other health problems in the body --can't remember which though
Reply:Sounds like the nerve is dead. You need a root canal, because now the tooth will be very fragile and may crack or break, and then you may lose the tooth.
Reply:I've had about ten root canals, they're really not that bad. I have genetics that are not on my side, and I had tetracycline when I was four; it made my baby teeth rot out, and turned the adult teeth yellow. If your tooth hurts, go and get it done. Sometimes that stuff can turn into an abscess which is a really heinous infection that can sometimes be fatal. Just because it doesn't hurt doesn't mean it's okay; they should have just done the root canal to get it over with instead of making you worry about something that's inevitable. Trust me, you feel a tinge, tell em to give you more Novocaine, anyway, it could always be worse, right?
Reply:If you have insurance I would recommend it. If not, then it is very costly. I paid over 1k and still dont even have it crowned yet. Dentist will rob you every chance they get. But if you have insurance than definately yes. Make sure they give you antibiotics first or the novacaine will not work and it hurts like a b....
Reply:Tooth pain comes and goes...eventually your tooth will break and start to fall out ..go get it fixed
Reply:As a dental assistant, I'd say yes. It's never a good idea to wait on these things. Remember, waiting is money; the longer you wait and the worse you let things get, the more complicated the procedure and the more it's going to cost you. Get it taken care of before things start to get messy.





If you aren't sure of things, though, you should always get a second opinion from a dentist or endodontist; as here we can only go by your description. A dentist or endo would need to take a history and see X-rays to give you a proper second opinion. But do not fear the root canal. It is a long procedure that sometimes takes a couple of visits to complete; but there shouldn't be any pain involved. If it hurts, simply tell the doc and ask for more anesthetic. And don't balk at the thought of getting the tooth "capped" afterward. A "root-canaled" tooth will discolor and become brittle to the point of breaking if it is left without a crown. And an extraction is not an option; only a last resort as this can have a "domino-effect" on the rest of your teeth. So get thee to your dentist!!!
Reply:You need a root canal my friend. though that tooth is necrotic (dead) there is something called a recrudescent or "phoenix" abscess that can come about. Right now you may be assymptomatic at any time the pain can return. now the risks involved with not getting the root canal are these 1) infection causing an abscess. now if there is an abscess there a a few potentially dangerous consequences. if there is no pathway for the abscess to drain you could have a lot of pain. now if there is no pathway for the infection to drain the abscess could get very large, in this case it could become so large that it blocks your airway and become potentially life threatening, if the infection gets very large it could also potentially become a bacterial septicemia, and spread into your blood stream. the worse case scenario is an infection that spreads into brain causing bacterial meningitis. (life threatening) 2) decay under the tooth gets large enough that the tooth fractures. if enough of the tooth is compromised it may not be salvagable and may need to be extracted. at that point the cost of treatment will become alot higher, needing either a bridge, a partial denture or an implant.


i would recommend that you get the root canal. even though you may not think you need it right now there are potential risks involved that arent really worth it. even if you do not want the root canal at least treat it by extracting it. now remember everything i told you is not absolute, the chances of some of those things are small but its not something you want to necessarily risk . hope this helps.
