Pain after having a root canal?

Part of my bottom back molar broke off and the dentist did a root canal 2 1/2 weeks ago. (I never had any pain until after the root canal). I'm still taking Advil 3-4 times a day from the pain. It's not a constant pain...I try to eat on the other side of my mouth but sometimes if I chew on the root canaled tooth it's painful and if I put any pressure on the tooth it hurts. I went back to the dentist today and he said he had to kill 3 nerves and it takes up to 4 weeks for the pain to go away. I took all my antibiotics he gave me after having the root canal and he said I dont' need any more. He advised me to take motrin and call him in 2 more weeks if I'm still in pain. Does that sound right???

I've had about 3 root canals in the past and never had any pain.

Pain after having a root canal?
While it can take a while for the pain to go away, I'd keep an eye on it. I recently had to have a root canal re-done after having multiple infections in that tooth.

Make sure that there isn't any swelling accompanying the pain. If you notice any, call your dentist immediately, whether it's been two weeks or not. Otherwise, give it a chance to heal. Root canals are pretty invasive. On top of that, you're constantly using your mouth (not you necessarily, all of us ;-) ) That will make it heal more slowly in some cases.
Reply:No it doesn't sound right ... it sounds wrong ... you need a second opinion and you need it now ... you should not have pain after a root canal ... please call another dentist.
