Root canal? please read!!?

i had a root canal done (summer 2007) in my front tooth (not front but near the two front teeth) and yestarday i went for a crown at my local dentist...she just put a fake tooth for 3 weeks ....what does it mean that i don't have my real tooth anymore? when you have root canal done that means that they take out your tooth?

After the root canal you still have your real tooth, just with a whole through the center, and the nerve is removed. Then the dentist removes part of your tooth structure (called preparing the tooth) so that they can make you a new tooth (called a crown.) The "fake tooth" is just a temporary until your new tooth comes back from the lab. You need a new tooth because after your nerve is removed by a root canal, your tooth can become brittle and turn gray. Hope this helps!
Reply:No, I believe they remove the nerves in your tooth, not the tooth itself.
Reply:basically after they do a root canal, your original tooth is very weak and brittle. Thats why they need to put a harder crown on top of what is left of the original tooth.
Reply:It's not a fake tooth, but in order to do a root canal a lot of the tooth is removed. A crown is a metal or porcelain piece that replaces the pieces of tooth that were removed. It's sort of cemented to the remaining part of the tooth.
Reply:No you still have your tooth but when you have a root canal they drill a hole in your tooth in order to get to the root so like think of it as just having the outside of your tooth the the inside is just a hole( like if you have an orange and you take out all the juice and just the peel is left). this makes the tooth really weak and easy to break so you get a crown to cover it.
Reply:A root canal is when they grind your tooth down to it roots, remove the tissue inside the roots, and then put a porcelain replica on top of what remains. Your tooth will only be the very bottom portion and the roots. The crown will replace where your real tooth used to be. A bridge is when they remove your toth and put a fake one in between two existing healthy teeth. they use a metal bridge to hold it place on the inside and out. Good luck.
Reply:Sounds to me like you are describing a temporary tooth, put in place by your dentist while he/she is waiting for a permanent tooth to be made at the lab. You should still have the original tooths root in your jaw and some visible outside of the gumline. The nerves are removed in the root canal--or


removal of the center of the original tooth--leaving the frame of the tooth providing support and shape for your jaw.


The new crown may be one of many materials, hopefully white. The new crown may or may not contain one of many metals available, some of which are controversial.


Sounds like you'll be getting your permanent tooth in three weeks. Having saved as much of the original as possible by have the root canal, was a very wise choice.
