i had a deep cavity and dentist suggested a crown after some of the filling on it came off. until then i was in no pain. When they did dig up the tooth, they took off lot of tooth structure so even after crown placement there was acute sensitivity. so i had to get a root canal done. now they did a cast and post to build up and here is my problem. The post end does not touch the root canal filling there is an empty space between the two. I read in science journals that this is a signal for root canal failure down the line. ive had 4 root canals over the years and im really freaked out thinking abt a retreatment later down the line. my dentist thinks im fine. how hard is it to get a new proper fitting post? and is it advisable at this point to ask for it. i didnt get the permanent cemented yet...(bite problem's not yet taken care of with temp and tooth hurts)
Root canal question?
I don't believe this to be true. While it is true you try to avoid voids, when the post is cemented, cement will fill the space between the gutta percha (root canal filling material) and the end of the post. If the seal at the tip of the tooth is good, and if the fit of the post is good, then there is no reason to think there will be any leakage into the root that would result in a buildup of bacteria.
I would suspect you are worrying about something for no reason.
You should get the "bite problem" resolved, so you can make sure that the tooth settles down, and that there isn't a problem with the root canal.
Reply:Hello, First...what you had was not a "cast" and post, but rather a "Post %26amp; Core"....Second, how do you know the Post isn't deep enough into the canal? Only an Xray can provide that information....Chances of the post not being surrounded by cement inside the canal is all but impossible. The DDS would have had to do a really lousy job of first, filing the canal with cement and second of placing the post...If that indeed is the case it goes without saying the entire procedure "must" be redone. Good luck and I wish you well.
