Root canal?

Do they hurt a lot? Also how long do they take estimated? Thanks.

Root canal?
Well let me just say that every tooth is different just like every dentist is different.

I work for a dentist and we do root canals quit often, at least one a day. And we take about an hour or two. now keep in mind it may take you an addition 20 minutes to get fully numb and it could take longer depending on the tooth and how many roots there are.

as far as hurting, NO they should not hurt at all. In fact you should relief.

If you have a tooth that needs a root canal, it means you tooth is infected, once a tooth is infected it cannot heal on its own. So what happens in a root canal is the dentist preps an opening in the top of the tooth so he can get to the nerves. Once the nerves are exposed he cleans them out, clearing all the nerve as well as infection.

now I have seen a few but very few teeth that was so infected the root canal took more than one visit. and this is basically a tooth that just has to much infection to clear out at once,

so once the nerves are cleared out, the dentist can place a little cotton pellet in the tooth and fill it then in about a week or so bring you back in and reopen the tooth and finish the root canal.

this gives the infection a better chance a clearing up as well as giving you some relief to the pain you may be having.

I have had a root canal on a tooth and it was no different than having a filling.

I hope this helps.
Reply:The injection or injections to numb the site do hurt. The root canal itself shouldn't hurt although you will feel some pressure. If you are in uncomfortable or in pain let the dentist know and they will do what they can to numb the pain.
Reply:Well I'm thirteen (so I no wat pain is xP) and I got a root canal and it was about an hour and it didn't hurt at all and i didn't need antibiotics either so yep gd luck if ur doing it(: and don't worry ull be a ok(=
