Root canal can anyone tell me a little something about it?

I'm getting a root canal somethime this month I have a really bad cavity in one of my premolars and the tooth is starting to chip and fall apart my dentist said I need to have a root canal done. I haven't been to the dentist within the last ten years. I want to know like what kind of pain will it be? Will they put me to sleep or numb it? everything I'm terrified nobody is telling me about it except for it hurts. which isn't helping at all I am also going to get 4 fillings for the little cavities. how is that? do fillings hurt? The molar with the big cavity the dentist says its pretty severe and needs to be removed I'm having problems with it anything hot or cold that touches it is painful when they cleaned it and use water very painful I also get bad headaches from the tooth. Is a root canal normal for a 17 year old all the people were surprised of my age also. I'm soo nervous!and scared

Root canal can anyone tell me a little something about it?
I just had two of them done yesterday and it did not hurt at all. They numbed my mouth and did both of them in about 20 mins. Then went home... My mouth was numb for about 2 hours and then once it wasn't numb my teeth felt just like they normally do. No pain or nothing... I even ate pizza. lol. And I'm 15.
Reply:well i was about 17 when I had a root canal. I felt i could have prevented it, but I don't worry that i had one at such an early age. They took x-rays, they numed my mouth with a needle, it looks big, but you just feel it a little, there is much worse pain in life. They worked on it for a while, opening up the tooth and all that, then they filled it with something and I never evne knew I had it done since, you can't chew for a little but that is such short time...I suggest you go to a website that describes the whole procedure so you know every step the doctor is doing and become familiar with the words...don't be scared at all, you won't notice it after a week.
Reply:Yes, it will hurt a little, I would say that the most painful part is when they numb you mouth, but during the procedure, you will just feel alot of pressure (not painful) and thats all. I had the same problem with one of my teeth. One thing I will say, the root canal fixed the problem and I have not had any pain since.
Reply:No one can tell you how much it will hurt because it's different for everyone. I didn't even feel it when I got my root canal done last year, but my mom hurt for a week every time she's had one done.

They will try to numb it and most dentists prefer you to stay awake these days. Once you're numb, they drill out the nerves of the tooth, basically killing the tooth. After that they fill the tooth and then they will put a crown (essentially a cap that looks like your tooth) on top of it, to make it look like the rest of your teeth.

You will likely still be sensitive to cold and hot for a couple of days, despite not having a root left in the tooth, but that goes away after a little while.

17 is fairly young to be having a root canal, but it's not that surprising if you haven't seen a dentist in 10 years.

Don't be too nervous, it's not as bad as it sounds. Most people ache for a day or two but it's nothing dramatic.
Reply:I've had a couple of them. The worst of it for me is always the shot for the Novocain itself. But if they get you numb enough then you shouldn’t feel anything after that. Letting the tooth become worse is always more painful then the work that need to be done. The fillings and root canal are the same amount of pain (for me anyway). I never felt anything after I was numb.

As for the molar being removed. It can be very scary but just let them do it. The pain that you are dealing with now isn't worth the short amout of time that it takes for them to remove it. They will numb you good. They may even put you to sleep if you request it, but most dentists don't like to do that.

Suggestions- just relax and let the dentist do what he/she needs to. They know what they are doing.
Reply:Root canals are done if decay or infection has entered the nerve in a tooth. The nerve is removed, the empty canal where the nerve was is disinfected, and a special filling that seals the tooth is placed inside. It usually takes one or two appointments to do a root canal on a premolar. After the root canal therapy is completed, dentists usually recommend a crown (cap) be placed on top of the tooth to protect it, especially on back teeth that have to withstand chewing forces.

A root canal due to advanced decay in a 17 year old is fairly uncommon, but not unheard of. Adolescents and late teens are much more likely to need a root canal on a front tooth due to an injury, than on a back tooth due to decay.

If the tooth doesn't hurt because of infection or decay before the root canal procedure is done, it probably won't hurt during or after the root canal. You will be numbed up and shouldn't feel anything, but you will be aware that the dentist is doing something to your tooth. If your tooth is abscessed, your dentist may want you to take antibiotics to clear up infection before the tooth is treated.

The molar area will stop hurting once the tooth is removed, but it sometimes takes a couple of days for the area to calm down, especially if it's badly infected. You may need to take both antibiotics and pain medications for that tooth.

If your teeth with the small cavities don't hurt now, they also probably won't hurt after you have the filllings done. You will be numbed up, and won't feel anything during the procedures.

It's great that you're getting your mouth into shape. Even with the extraction and the root canal, you're going to look and feel much better with your teeth fixed.

If you are nervous about the procedures and have lots of questions, let your dentist know. Once you have some of your questions answered and you are out of pain, you probably won't be as nervous.
Reply:Sorry your goin through that, tweety. I actually came here to learn a bit about it myself. My 13 yo daughter is having one and I think im more scared then her. I have had lots of experience with dentists and one thing I can absolutely tell you, I always felt silly afterward because i had worried so much about it and imagined such bad stuff. Its never as bad as your imagination thinks it will be.

thanks to dds for the info.
Reply:i didnt feel it but having to hold my mouth open tht long my lips hurt afterwards
