I had a root canal done by an endodontist and everything went fine. I need to have a crown put on by my regular dentist. I've never had a crown done before so I'm wondering what to expect.
Does anesthethic have to be used when getting the crown? After the root canal, isn't the tooth dead to any feeling? I am wondering how long a crown procedure takes and if you need anesthetic and if there would possibly be any pain after a crown on a tooth that had a root canal done.
thanks
Root canal / crown question?
HI VALERENA,
HOW LONG THE WHOLE APPOINTMENT TAKES DEPENDS QUITE REALISTICALLY ON THE DENTIST DOING THE WORK GENERALLY TAKES ABOUT 90 MIN.
YOU WILL WANT ANESTHETIC BECAUSE THE DRILL FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE IF THE GUMS ARE TOUCHED BY IT.THE SECOND APPOINTMENT SHOULD BE MUCH SHORTER FROM 15 TO 30 MIN DEPENDING ON WHETHER ADJUSTMENT IS REQUIRED.
PAIN AFTER IS RARE BUT DOES HAPPEN.THIS IS USUALLY DUE TO THE BITE BEING TOO. HIGH.
Reply:Stop worrying - you won't feel a thing.
Reply:I have had 2 root canals and several crowns put on. I have always gotten the nmbing shot before they put a crown on cause they grind the tooth down to a stump and fit the crown on top. I guess they numb you in case they nick the surrounding gums or to minimize the pain from presurre on the jaw bone. The entire procedure takes about 2.5 hours but thats usually broken into 2 sessions. First they have to take a mold of your tooth to make a crown that will fit your mouth, then you'll go back and they'll fit it on. Sometimes they'll only glue it with a temp glue but that's usually when the tooth only needs a crown and has not had a RC. Good luck. The most painful part is the shot in the gums to numb you.
Reply:My hubby had root canal and then crown. Needed anethstesia for the crown bit too. Had some pain for a few days after the crown but controlled with tylenol and ibuprofin.
Each person is differnt though in pain tolerance so you might want to ask your dentist for a script for pain meds if you think you might need them.
Reply:Alright first the crown procedure....When a dentist puts a cap or crown on the tooth he needs to create room for the tooth. To do this the dentist removes between 1 to 2mm of tooth structure aound the tooth and on top with a high speed diamond bur on his drill...the only reason why I mention this part is because a high speed diamond bur generates a lot of heat and your tooth can conduct this heat...and while the nerve is gone and tooth is dead the bone and tissue are alive and well. Thus most dentists will "numb" you up. Also they will be working around the gum line which can hurt a little. I have seen one person do it without anesthetic but it wasn't comfortable for them.
After they "prep" the tooth they will take an impression...send it to a lab...make the crown....and cement the crown on.
It normally will take two one hour appointments unless your dentist has a cerac machine which spits out crowns (in which case it will only take one appointment)
