Root canal question ?

i got a root canal done yesterday, and the tooth still hurts

how long is the pain going to last?

and is it normal for the tooth to hurt after i got the root canal?

Root canal question ?
It shouldn't be hurting enough to bother you. At least not as much as before you got it done. If your dentist didn't prescribe any pain medication, you might wanna give him/her a call to see if its normal or if you just need meds.
Reply:Pain is normal. Could last for a week. Watch for fistulas, or openings in the gum line. This would indicate infection and require antibiotics. Also, notice bad breath or a rotten taste.
Reply:it is pretty normal, that is why your dentist probably prescribed you pain pills too. Even after simple filling, your teeth are sometimes sensitive for 2 or 3 more days. Don't worry. If the pain doesn't stop or gets smaller in couple days, go back and check with the doctor.
Reply:I had a root canal recently and the Dr said it was normal for the tooth to have some pain for a few days (not bad pain, but controllable by advil or the sorts)...but keep an eye on it...mine got these weird sharp pains the just seemed to get worse, which ended up being a sign of an infection. My advice, if the pain doesnt get better in a few days (or gets worse) call your dentist and talk to them, you may have an infection or something...they can give you some meds and fix you right up!!
Reply:Root canals, from what I understand, are the result of decay within a given tooth that effect the nerve. In my case, I had a cavity that was really deep and even after I had a filling put in it continued to decay almost all the way to the jaw bone.

The explanation that I got from the dentist is that the nerve of my tooth had died and it needed to be removed as well as the decay and infection inside of my tooth.

Basically what he did was go inside my tooth, take all of the decay out, clean the four canals of my tooth, made a mold of my real tooth and then put a temporary cap back in my tooth. After a couple of weeks the permanent cap arrived in his office and he simply took off the temporary and replaced it with the permanent cap.

As far as the operation itself, I was given a local anestetic and I was awake through the whole thing. I felt no pain at all and I even drove home from the dentist's office.

I've had two root canal operations, one without dental insurance and one with it, and it can be very expensive. When I had it done without insurance the whole procedure, including the permanent cap, cost about $1,300. Believe me it was not fun to have to pay that but you need to have this operation done.

If you wait too long the tooth can become infected, like mine did, and it can spread to other parts of your body and cause serious complications. I waited about two and a half years before I finally had my second root canal done.

The quality of a root canal has to do with the dentist, his equipment, and his specialty. Root canals require crowns, so you’re looking at a minimum of $1,000 in treatment. MINIMUM. However, if it’s a front tooth, you’re pretty safe. If it’s a back tooth or decayed tooth then you should see a specialist and not just your regular dentist. Its only $200-300 more.

Reply:No, at least, I didn't think so. I had the exact same question as you just before I did and from what I'd heard before I was so scared, but its nothing , I had a swollen face too before it. the pain only lasted a couple of days and the pus sack thing only lasted a few hours and popped while I was asleep! NICE! ;]

But be careful cos i had mine done a few months ago , the tooth died which was normal , turned back (also normal) and on mon Im meant to be having a crown but the tooth has suddenly started throbbing but not painful, just irritating! So Im going back tommorow instead. and make sure you brush well etc after! Also, try oil of cloves, ice, asprin and salt water mouth wash, it helps numb the pain!
