Root Canal inquiry?

Okay so, after trying for several weeks to save my tooth, the stupid thing just seems to want to die.

So fine, today I called my dentist's office and told him my pain was getting on my nerves (no pun intended) and I want him to take a look at it.

He opened it up and saw that there was no infection, but the tooth did need a root canal because of the pain.

Oh yeah, I had pain in my upper molar and also in the ear, all thanks to the molar tooth that needed the root canal.

So anyways, he sat me down and took the nerves out. I'm pretty sure he also cleaned the pathways up, but he stopped there and told me to schedule with his specialist (it's a pretty big office) 2 weeks from today.

Now, my question is... is the worst part over? Because it DID hurt quite a lot until he gave the shots straight to the nerves... The rest is just filling the canals up and then shutting it with a cup right?

Just crossing my fingers that the worst is behind me, heh...

Root Canal inquiry?
I have had many root canals and they don't hurt much after, I see people calling out from work for several days and Ihave had it done and gone back to finish up the rest of the work day.

What does confuse me, why is he sending you to a specialist after the root canal? My dentist has only sent me out one time and that was when a root was twisted and he could not get past the twist. Your dentist should be able to complete the whole thing in a visit or 2. I suspect that he is sending you to a specaialist because he is in the same office because then they make more money.
Reply:I've had several root canals, unfortunately. I think that once they take the root out, which is the nerve, the worst is over. Of course I never mind dentists....
Reply:Baby I'm sorry but what kind of dentist did you go to? You are not supposed to feel anything when getting a root canal!..

I'VE HAD 2 ROOT CANALS in my life and the first one i went through hell, not sure if its because that fat bastard didn't want to use up his anesthesia but it hurt so much that i was literally crying and a week later i had to return to his office due to an infection.... eventually i went to an oral surgeon to finish the job (they put me to sleep w/ the gas mask). The second root canal i had done 2 years ago (over 10 yrs later) and i am happy to say i did not feel anything... I love my dentist- I found him 5 years ago and i am never letting him go.. Before him i was terrified of them, i couldn't stand them, i used to get so nervous just thinking about the dentist's office but ever since i have this new doctor i see that is not the procedures that makes our visits hell... Is the dentist!
Reply:Don't listen to K77, or corse there is some pain and discomfort in getting a root canal. Thats why everyone dreads them so much! But to answer your question, YES the worst is over. I had one done a couple months ago and they did it the same way they are doing you. The rest is pretty easy and painfree!
Reply:when i got a root canal the dentist put a metal rod kind of like a pin in my tooth and he covered it with some kind of cement stuff. it didnt hurt at all. i couldn't feel anything in my mouth for a while because of the shots.
Reply:Sounds like you have a tooth that is in the final stages of having the nerve die. These teeth are the hardest to get numb! It sounds like your dentist did a pupotomy, removing the live part of the tooth (the blood suppy and nerve) but did not complete the rooth canal therapy. He probably want to give it time to quiet down before you see the specialist to complete the rooth canal therapy. Did he give you antibiotics? Did he give you anti-inflammatory drugs? Did he give you strong pain meds? Just want to make sure that all your bases are covered. Can't promise that when you go to have to tooth treated again that you won't have any pain but it should be okay. Don't be afraid to talk to the dentist that you are seeing about your fears. He'll take good care of you.
