Will a tooth hurt after root canal treatment & crown, when there is no pain before the root canal treatment?

I have a lower molar with a big cavity which requires root canal treatment and crown. Although the cavity is big, but there is no pain all along. I need the root canal and crown done to save the tooth. The endodontist wants me to undergo a treatment and filling (I guess it's cleaning of the tooth and then cover with a temporary filling) a few months before root canal treatment to see if the tooth will hurt after the temporary filling. It is like putting a test on the tooth. Of course, I need to pay additional amount for this procedure. My questions are :-


1) Is it possible that a tooth will hurt after the filling when there was no pain before the root canal treatment.???? And why??? 2) Is it true that when a big cavity is covered with filling, the tooth may hurt?? I'm very worried if the tooth will hurt after the root canal and crown.


Will appreciate if anyone who has the experience or who are knowledgeable on this, please kindly give me your valuable advice. Thank you in advance.

IT SURPRISES ME THAT THERE WILL BE AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR A TEMPORARY FILLING THAT WILL EVENTUALLY BE REMOVED PRIOR TO THE CROWN. THE ENDODONTIST SHOULD NOT CHARGE FOR THIS. WHY NOT JUST COMPLETE THE ROOT CANAL IN1 VISIT AND BE DONE WITH IT. TO DO IT TWICE, THE INITIAL TREATMENT AND TEMP FILLING ONLY TO BE FOLLOWED BY A ROOT CANAL LATER?


1. WHENEVER THERE IS DRILLING ON ANY TOOTH FOR A FILLING THERE WILL BE SENSITIVITY AFTERWARD FOR SOME TIME, WHY? BECAUSE THE TOOTH HAS RECEIVED TRAUMA AND THE UNDERLYING NERVE REACTS TO THE "INVASION."


2. THE LARGE FILLING ON THE TOOTH WITH A CAVITY WILL BE SENSITIVE, AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE DRILLING, AND THE PROXIMITY OF THE NERVE TO THE FILLING.


AFTER A ROOT CANAL IS COMPLETED AND THERE IS A CROWN PLACED ON IT, IT MY STILL REMAIN SENSITIVE.


WHY?


AGAIN, THIS IS BECAUSE THE TOOTH HAD TO ENDURE TRAUMA. THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT ROOT CANALS SHOULDN'T BE DONE. ONLY THAT PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHY A ROOT CANAL IS NECESSARY, AND WHAT IS TO BE EXPECTED.


AFTER ALL THE OLD FILLING IS REMOVED AND THE DECAY IS CLEANED OUT, THE ROOT CANAL CAN TAKE PLACE. THE ROOT CANAL WILL LEAD TO THE TOOTH BECOMING BRITTLE AND A CROWN NEEDS TO BE PLACED OVER THE REMAINING TOOTH TO KEEP IT FROM FUTURE FRACTURE. THERE WILL PROBABLY NEED FOR A POST TO BE PLACED AFTER THE ROOT CANAL TO HOLD THE BASE (CORE) THAT WILL HOLD THE CROWN. THIS WILL ALL BE WORTH IT IN THE END TO SAVE THE TOOTH.
Reply:Hi, yes it can hurt with the filling prior to the root canal...due to there is pressure on top of the nerves now. Nerves are exposed more when there is a cavity, therefore the pain. When you have the root canal done, the nerves are then removed, and you just have the tooth as a "bowl to be filled" (for lack of better example) with the packing materials they use. Good luck.
Reply:You shouldn't feel anything at all after a root canal. They remove the root completely. They will put in a post to make sure the tooth remains rooted to your gums. You may feel a bit sore after but you will not experience any pain what so ever after that sore feeling goes away.
Reply:yes it is possible but not probable that you will have pain. there's nothing to it. I just had two root canals in the last month with crowns and it did not hurt ever. Just remember the nitrous oxide.
Reply:I've had 2 root canals with crowns and have never experienced any pain before or after the procedures. One of my root canals had some calcification in the canal but even then I have not experienced any pain.
Reply:I went to the dentist myself today for a toothache, bottom lower molar that was hurting like hell. It was badly decayed so I thought for sure they were going pulled it, but they said it could be saved and I had a root canal. I had it cleaned and filled and so far no pain. And I had a huge cavity.I'm surprised you didnt have pain, especially for him to suggest a root canal.Once the root canal is done, it should not hurt since the root is gone.
Reply:1)Your tooth should not hurt hafter the rootcanal. However, yes the tooth will hurt eventually if you don't get the rootcanal done, because you would still have the nerves.


2) The tooth should not hurt after the rootcanal because they will take the nerve out, clean your canals, and then place a permanent medicated fake nerve in the canals. Then, you will be back to get the crown done.
