Can a root canal be done with a crown on the same tooth?

I had a filling fall out of my molar #18, the last tooth on the bottom. The dentist started grinding my tooth before putting in a new filling, and she exposed the nerve. There was no decay in the tooth at that point. She said get a root canal first, then she would put on a crown. But the root canal would cost me 1000+, and my teeth has no decay and doesnt hurt. Is it possible to have another dentist put on a crown only without root canal? at this point? I figure I can always get a root canal later since it may not bother me or be necessary at this point if at all?

Can a root canal be done with a crown on the same tooth?
It's possible to get the crown without the root canal, but if you need a root canal, you should do it now. If you having a dying root, the tooth becomes extremely sensitive to hot and cold. If you are not experiencing those symptoms, then you could just get the crown for now.

Something to keep in mind though, is at some point you do need a root canal on that tooth, they will have to destroy the crown to do it.
Reply:Yes, I have had one done!! Good luck
Reply:I would definitely get a 2nd opinion before letting her do the root canal. If it is necessary, then she should do it for free since she messed up your non-decaying tooth
Reply:Yes, I have had a root canal on a tooth after the crown was in place, However, they do a root canal to fix an infection in the pulp (root) of the tooth, not to fix a cavity. If you don't get a root canal, the infection can spread and you could lose that tooth and the ones around it.

If you don't trust the dentist, get a second opinion. However, if the work needs to be done, you need to do it as soon as possible, or you are facing much more serious problems.

If you can't afford it, ask if you can pay it off over time or do some barter work with the dentist. (I have an accountant friend who trades bookkeeping for her crown work).
Reply:No way! If the nerve is exposed as you say, you NEED the root canal before you get the crown - no question about it!

If you get the crown first, then need the root canal, you have to do it through the crown, which may damage the crown and is harder to do.

Go get the root canal.
Reply:Oh Honey let me tell you . If I were you I would get that root canal. I know that it sounds like alot of money and that it's a scary sounding proceedure, but I have a crown and they did the same thing only they didn't do the root canal and now I am paying for it. My mouth hurts 24/7. I take 2 ibuprofren altleast twice a day. I am getting ready to go get the root canal done beuz I cannot live this way. I want the pain to be gone and soon. A tooth ache from an exposed nerve hurts your whole mouth. My other teeth which are fine have like sympathy pains in them from the one that's hurting, NO JOKE! any way, It's all up to you, but my advice would be to get it done. GOOD LUCK!
Reply:Your dentist should of just replaced your filling, if there wasn't a cavity or any root exposure. She had no right grinding your tooth down without telling you. If the tooth needed a crown, because the filling was to big, and she thought maybe it would just fall out again, she should of explained that to you. Now for the root exposure, you are going to need a root canal, eventually this will cause a very painful situation if you don't. I think the Dr. should take care of at least half the cost. Since she is the one who grounded to much to have your root exposed. Give me a break!
