Dental root canal question?

I have an absess (sp?) on the gum above one of my teeth. Does this always mean a root canal is needed? I'm not asking this instead of going to the dentist - I'm trying to figure out whether I need to go to my regular dentist or the root canal dentist. I don't have dental insurance and I don't want to pay for my regular dentist visit just for him to tell me I have to go to the other dentist for a root canal.

Thanks!

Dental root canal question?
Actually both dentist are going to take what we call a "PA." A Periapical is a x-ray of the tooth causing the pain singled out. And no it doesn't always mean you need a root canal. Maybe your nerve is not that far gone, aka exposed yet to be a candidate for root canal treatment. The best thing to do is to let an endodontist check you out. They are the ones that are fully prepared for you case! Best Wishes!
Reply:1) Never, ever get a Root Canal.

2) I would first try Oil Pulling for the gum problem.
