Root Canal Question?

I went to the dentist with pain in my tooth. He completely removed the nerve, but said I would need a root canal and then a crown. I have dental insurance, but the cost to me will still be about $500 for all of it. Since I am having no more pain, what will happen if i DONT have the root canal done?

Root Canal Question?
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years. I don't think he removed the nerve completely because that is what a root canal is. What he may have done is killed the nerve and that is why you are out of pain. However the compete Root canal treatment must be done with a core and crown after or you will lose the tooth completely. Root canaled teeth become very brittle since they are dead an discolor and break down. The whole idea is to keep the root structure and restore is with a natural looking crown so you don't need a bridge or implant with cost 3 TIMES as much and INS. won't pay because you blew it with losing the tooth by NOT restoring it the first time. Please listen to the professional and don't cut corners. If you had this done in my office in New Jersey it would cost you 1500.00 with Ins. so you are already ahead. Please do the right thing or you may have terrible regrets in the future. If you have any other questions, please ask. Marie
Reply:Tooth will turn brown and drop out.
Reply:I .am not a dentist, but I have had a root canal, but I do not understand why he removed the nerve. Did he remove it completely?. He probably wants you to have a root canal to save your tooth. Your tooth will need a crown placed to preserve the tooth. The crown is molded to fit your tooth. It will conform to the tooth,(to have the same bite as the tooth has. The crowns are made from porcelin(white material, sorry for the spelling) or gold.material. You should talk with your dentist for the answers you have. Before having a treatment of any kind be well informed.
Reply:It will probably rot and fall out. Get it fixed. Good Luck! You'll be fine.
Reply:The Dentist may have removed the nerve to get you out of pain. The rest of the root canal involves completely cleaning out the canals (with bleach) where the nerve once was and then a material called gutta percha is placed where the nerve once was. If you do nothing the infection will return along with the pain.
Reply:Please have it done. I got two root canals done in one sitting in less than 45mins and it was a walk in the park. (It cost me 1200) But seriously, there is nothing like peace of mind when it comes to your teeth.

I wouldn't postpone it just because of the FEAR of having that horrible tooth pain come back and losing your tooth! And rest assured that the pain WILL come back, and it'll be worse!!The root canal gets rid of all the infection, along with antibiotics.

Best advice; listen to your Doctor, he knows what's best for you, even if you doubt it sometimes.

Good luck!
Reply:he/she probably did not remove the nerve completely , hence the need for a root canal. after a root canal in time the tooth becomes brittle that's the reason for the crown, to keep the tooth in tacked. if you do not follow through with the root canal your tooth will hurt again; in time, no telling when but it will. you also run the risk of the tooth breaking off little by little, so much that if you do not take this taken care of, you may not have enough tooth structure to keep the tooth in the future--extraction. have the treatment, you have to know how lucky you are for not having to pay the full price for your treatment, without your insurance this would be in the thousands. good luck and don't forget to floss............
Reply:go and get it fixed! TRUST me! i did exactly wat u r thinking of, and left it cos it was pain free after my 1st visit... but the pain comes back i assure u, and it comes back worse than ever! i spent 4 days in bed crying over the w/e, couldnt eat and couldnt sleep.. i no how expensive root canals are but getting rid of the pain really is worth it. it will also end up costing u more if u leave it, cos they will have 2 start over again and put more antibiotics down the roots. u r actually getting it cheap anyways, as mine was double that. dont leave it, trust me really not worth the pain at all!
