Root Canal (Can Someone Tell Me What's Going Off)?

well i had a root canal back in september, since i had the root canal *on my front tooth* nothing changed and the pain was the exact same as beforehand and my tooth discoloured a little.

4 weeks later i went back, told my dentist how my tooth felt - so he spent 30 mins with this tool cleaning it inside my tooth (not sure what else), i got home my tooth colour was back to normal, but the pain was still the same.

1 week later, the tooth discoloured again (tooth still painful), it's now been 6 weeks and my appointment is in 2 weeks.

1) what is the cleaning he was doing? should that reduce the pain?

2) will he do the same thing (over and over again) until the pain goes and my tooth is no long discoloured, or does the canal need re-doing?

would appreciate some advice because my dentist doesn't talk much (just does is job and send you on your way) :/

thanks.

Root Canal (Can Someone Tell Me What's Going Off)?
It is normal for a root canal treated tooth to hurt for several days after the procedure. The tooth should not hurt a month after the procedure, however. It is normal for a root canal treated tooth to discolor as well. This problem is usually corrected with a crown (for strength and esthetics). It is possible that the root canal may need to be retreated by the original doctor or a specialist, or that you have a root fracture. Root fractures are difficult to diagnose since hey rarely show up on X-rays. If you do have a root fracture, though, the tooth will unfortunately have to be extracted and be replaced with a removable partial denture, a fixed bridge, or an implant.

Root canal treated teeth must be whitened from the inside, unlike other, live teeth which can be whitened topically. The dentist may have been trying to lighten the color of your tooth without doing a crown. Next time, make sure you ask him about what's going on and where you go from here. Communication with your dentist is key. He may think you don't care to know all about the procedures that he's performing on you. Ask questions and get answers...otherwise, switch dentists. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Reply:Mine never hurt that long. I've had three done; one has been awaiting its crown for over a year. I had one done and the tooth next to it started hurting. He just opened it up and cleaned it out real good, and that (along with a few days of antibiotics) stopped the hurting for a couple of months.

I'd try another dentist. The one you have isn't effectively stopping your pain and that's what you need right now.
