Root Canal, but I already have a crown...?

My dentist tells me that the porcelain crown should be removed, root canal done, and then put a new crown on. I have already had a root canal done where the dr. drilled through the crown and just had to have a filling put in the small holes. Which way is better?

Root Canal, but I already have a crown...?
typically that is how it is done- a opening in the existing crown gives access to the canals and once the procedure is completed- they seal the tooth with amalgam .

i don't know why he is removing the crown to make a new one except possibly the old crown has faulty margins or some sort of defect.

if there is something wrong with the existing crown then replacing it is definitely the best way to go.
Reply:It was not a root canal if they did not remove the entire nerve feeding the tooth. Drilling "deep" is not the same as a root canal.

If your dentist thinks the tooth is dying, then yes, root canal. But you need to know why it's being suggested. Does the crown merely need to be replaced? Or is there additional decay UNDER the crown? Talk to your dentist.
Reply:Listen to the Dr. Unless you want unneeded pain. But a root canal should have been done before the crown was applied. Ask to see you dental record. And read the treatment for the tooth your worried about.

p.s. They have to show you your record. If not they are hiding something.
Reply:Talk dentist about iontophoresis on tooth, some time it elimate need for root canal.
