I had a root canal about a little over a month ago. After they gave me amoxicillin in case of an infection, but I never took all the pills. Now I just brushed my teeth and I feel slight pain where the root canal was. Should I finish the amoxicillin? What do u think is the cause of this? Im afraid of going through that pain again...
Root canal...infection?
It is unusual to be given antibiotics at the end of an RCT because there should be no further infection present. However, you were given them and took some, and it wouldn't have done any harm.
You shouldn't start the antibiotics again. That is not the way to treat failed RCTs, and anyway I doubt you have this. If the pain you felt when brushing your teeth was a sensitivity to the bristles or the cold water, then it would not be coming from the RCTd tooth. A failed RCT would usually feel as a deep ache.
If you're not sure, then visit the dentist again.
Reply:Sometimes patients experience sensitivity after a root canal....A) because the persons' bite is out of occlussion (your tooth may have a high spot and needs to be adjusted w/ a handpiece), B) the root canal failed, C) sometimes the Dentist has to retreat the tooth and make sure he got alllll the nerve out or D) you may need another course of antibiotics because that whole area in general was a bit traumatized.
Reply:Complete the course of antibiotics. Go see your dentist.
