Root canal = sinus infection?

I developed a major, painful, intense sinus infection after my root canal a few days ago. I had a really minor one just before I went in and then it was like it blossomed into a monster. Is it possible to develop a sinus infection after a root canal?

Going in and removing the dying nerve also stirs up much bacteria, so it is quite possible that your sinus infection got worse. It isn't good that you had a slight one to begin with, but when you need a RC you need one. I am assuming that they placed you on an antibiotic anyways after having a root canal done, so this should take care of the sinus infection.

Also, all the stress of going through the procedure as well as a lower immune response of having a low grade sinus infection will release more cortisol which is a stress hormone and can flare up other things like making a sinus infection worse.

I hope you feel better soon!
Reply:what does sinus have to do with teeth
Reply:yes!go back to the Dr,(family Dr) and tell you Dr you had a root canal! My mom had a piece of the tool break off, and the dentist didn't notice. You must get a head x-ray to see if this may have happened to you.And for sure, get antibiotics.
Reply:Hi,

I just had major root canal earlier today and the Dentist took multiple x-rays during the procedure. She noted that my sinus were inflamed and even though she had put me on Amoxicillan a few days ago in anticipation of the root canal she recommended I call my family Doctor and ask her to change my prescription to something more geared towards sinus infections. I'm now on Biaxin. My Dentist told me that the infection in my tooth had spread up into my sinus cavity and that Amoxicillin alone wouldn't help the sinus.

I hope you feel better soon - I'd recommend checking with your Family Doctor and ensuring you're on the right meds.

Good luck.
