I'm getting a root canal on Wednesday and I have some questions?

Apparently I bit into something which caused the tooth right next to my right front tooth to get chipped. It chipped on the inside of my mouth and the chip is going into my root. My dentist said if the chip goes horizontal into my root then the root canal will be all I need but if the chip is going straight down I will need to get my tooth pulled. :(

How much will the root canal hurt? Will my face be swollen afterwards?

My anniversary is on Friday and we made reservations at a really nice restaurant, am I going to be in pain the whole time? (I don't want to pay a lot of money if I'm not going to enjoy it)

I'm really scared about my root canal and possibly loosing my tooth.

I agree with the previous posters. I am a veteran of several root canals and my mouth is now exclusively crowns. The worst thing about a root canal is the time you are sitting in the chair. I assume that you will need a crown as well. The process isn't usually painful, just long. You should be fine for your dinner but, since you will probably have a temporary crown, use caution when chewing on it as they do have a habit of coming out. The permanent ones rarely loosen, though, since they are bonded with strong cement. Swelling usually isn't an issue. Good luck!
Reply:Ah, baby's first root canal. How sweet. You'll be getting more of them as you age. The worse thing about them is the Novocaine. You'll be numb for hours. The entire procedure is VERY boring. The dentist has to do the procedure in small steps. The temporary is a little annoying. You'll be able to enjoy your dinner. There should be zero swelling.
Reply:the root canal itself should not cause swelling, the only thing that might is if it gets infected, then it probably will, just make sure you follow your dentists cleaning procedures and you'll be good.
Reply:Hey... You Look like me!

And to answer you Q? Yes... it will hurt but take your prescription to the pharmacy ASAP! you will be fine by Friday!

Happy Aniversary!!!
Reply:The root canal doesn't hurt at all when it is being done, and after the anesthesia wears off it take a few days before the pain goes away. I took ibuprofen and vicodin. I took a vicodin before I ate and it really worked. There is no swelling in your face after a root canal.
Reply:I just had a root canal done last Tuesday. My first time having one. I was really nervous to have it done, but once she froze my cheek and worked away at the tooth, i relaxed. My face was just a little puffed, not too visible, lasted a day. I had no pain after whatsoever. Although, she gave me two ibuprofens before i left her office, her routine thing i guess...

I had mine on a Tuesday, and i was fine by the weekend. Did everything i normaly would on the weekend.

But you have to remember, everyone is different and some may not swell, some may, some may feel more pain and others not.

I wish you the best!
