Root canal?

I asked a question on here a couple of days ago about a toothache and was told by two dentists that I probably need a root canal based on my symptoms.....the tooth doesn't really hurt all that much at the minute, only after I've eaten something cold it aches for a while. What would happen if I left the tooth and didn't get it fixed right away? I don't have a dentist and can't afford to go private until September. Would it be OK to wait until then?

And what's it like having a root canal done? Does it hurt?

Root canal?
Just did a root canal yesterday on a young man. 24 yrs old. He was very surprised it did not hurt. the shots hurt at the beginning of the visit. He started to fall asleep during the procedure he told his wife. Generally, however, Root canal pain get worse the longer you wait. If you wait till there is constant pain the complicaitons are worse and hence more tendency to have PAIN. The most common length of pain following a root canal is 3 days we tell our patient after that your'e good. You need to know, also, once you get a root canal you have a limited time to have a crown done on the same tooth. As far as waiting it could be OK, but if the pain starts to become constant and random last longer than 30 seconds with no stimulus. You better get it done sooner. Officially, were trained to say got get it taken care of. In reality many patients wait for job insurance to kick in. Hope it helps. . .
Reply:root canals take like 2 or 3 visits to finish and hate to tell you they suck. but until september youll definately be alright.
Reply:Lets just say u have never felt anything like it unless have had a baby.but i dont want to scare you.

Now, i wouldnt want to wait intill sept. because it's very possible it could get worse, then u might have to get it pulled.
Reply:it will get worse, I used to leave mine and I have had them then turning into abscesses, this is not a nice thing to have and hurts more than tooth ache cos painkillers don't work at all! I have lost quite a few teeth this way. ok root canal will be a little bit uncomfortable but it is worth it.

speak to your dentist about payment, he may be able to help
Reply:The only other option is to have the tooth pulled. I had to do this once when I couldn't afford the root canal. Now I have a space. - can't afford a bridge either. If you can possibly swing it get the root canal. Usually they need to cap your tooth afterward. The cap cost just as much as the roota canal. Make sure you get all your info from the dentists before you start. Some dentists will do payment plans.
Reply:if you recieved the same opinion from two dentists, chances are they are right.

When they do a root canal, they numb your gum around the tooth (u will feel a short pinch from the needle).

then they drill into ur tooth, and take the root out and replace ur root with a small metal rod to hold yur tooth in place.

you dont feel anything but pressure while gettign it done. it doesnt hurt after the novacaine.

you should be okay until september depending on how bad it is. however, if it is severe u should get it done asap before your tooth starts REALY hurting, or you loose the tooth for good!

good luck!
Reply:You have a local anaesthetic so it shouldn't hurt. Get it done as soon as possible or you could end up with an abscess which is very painful and will make the treatment painful. The sooner the better as you stand a chance of saving the tooth. Once it's pulled out it's gone forever remember.
Reply:Well,I can tell you this. If you need to have a root canal done, don't put it off if possible. The tooth can get abscessed and can cause a life threatening infection called sepsis. (SP)? My dad let a tooth get to this point and ended up passing out while driving, and had blackout periods shortly before that. Trust me,you'd rather have the root canal vs having all your teeth pulled and getting dentures. The pain will only last for a short time compared to the problems you'll incur if you don't have it fixed.
Reply:DON'T WAIT!! There is always the possibility that if you wait too long, you could lose the tooth, which is no fun. If anything, ask the dentist his opinion on how long this can wait. Root canals aren't bad....they are VERY BORING! Most root canals can be done in 1 visit that can last as long as 3 hours (faster if you go to an endodontist-a specialist that only does root canals). YOU MUST have a crown done on a tooth that has had endo because there won't be any nerve tissue left to supply blood to the tooth, causing it to become dry %26amp; brittle. Root canal teeth are notorious for cracking %26amp; then having to be taken out IF A CROWN ISN'T DONE!! I feel so frusterated with people when they invest all that money into a root canal %26amp; then don't get a crown %26amp; they end up losing the tooth. Good luck!
Reply:drink/stack lot of pin reliver if your gonna wait that long
