Root canal?

I recently got a dental surgery done for my teeth.....i lost my front two teeth long back(about 12 years ago when i was 10) and i have got crown on both those teeth. I got some pus and a dental surgery was required. Now my dentist says that a root canal is to b done for the tooth next to one of my crowned tooth( that tooth was never broken and is fine). But he says its root canal is reuired otherwise it may lead to redoing the surgery all over again. He also told me that root canal makes a tooth weak n such tooth requires a crown after sometime say a year. I m really worried. I hv crown on my front two teeth which ***** b avoided but i dont want it on my 3rd tooth........is it true that a root canaled tooth requires a crown?

Pls advice me...........HELP ME!!!!

Root canal?
yes, because they shave off most of the tooth and it becomes hollow in the middle ( which is then filled in with breakable material - white resin filling) , so a crown is helpful to help it not break, but Not required if you really dont want it. the tooth will be fine for at least a year - and then you can see whether you need a crown - whether any bits broke off, or it is still intact

in reference to your added detail - it will work without a crown for a little less or a little more than a year. BUT each person is different - it depends on what and how you eat and how well you take care of your teeth. ALso now that youve said its on your front teeth - you DO need a crown - those are the most breakable teeth in the mouth ( especially #8 and #9) so just relax and dont worry how its going to look - at least it will be fixed and functional! Plus crowns today look amazing ( as compared to even 10 years ago)
Reply:it requires a crown only if the tooth is too weak to work right. otherwise you will get a filling
Reply:Yes,

If you get a root canal the basically file off most of your tooth. IT will look like a stub. They can fill the hole that leads to your root, but if you dont have a crown, you will have a stub.
Reply:I don't know if he should do the third one, maybe he's on drugs and needs the cash.

I've had a root canal that the dentist covered with a temporary filling and that lasted a long time before I needed the crown.
Reply:Yes. A root canal is procedure basically consists of drilling out the nerve endings of that tooth, then shaving down the cap, and building a post to put a crown on. It sucks and I empathize because I'm going through a "re-entry" procedure for a 3 year old root canal where the cap fell off recently. The bottom line is that once a dentist jacks up your teeth with a root canal, you'll have to favor those teeth forever when you eat and chew. However, it isn't the end of things and if you need one, then you need it. I've tried to live with not getting a root canal on another tooth for 3 years. Things were fine, however, eventually the integrity of the tooth weakened and now I have to get another one. Try getting a second opinion from a endodontist or another dentist. Dentists are doctors like any other, sometimes they are wrong.

Floss and brush regularly, like twice everyday. And avoid eating hard *** foods like nuts and stuff that add impact to your teeth. Dental decay is a natural physiological evolution of your teeth due to eating food... which is a requirement too. Foods that cause high impact to your teeth will expedite that process.

Caps for a good root canal typically lasts about 3 - 4 years though.

Reply:depending on how broken down a tooth is before the root canal is done has a little to do with it but yes, a root canal'd tooth does become brittle. some docs want it protected immediately and sometimes they will say ohh...within the year- but its sooner the better.
