Root Canal?

My tooth refused to become num for a filling and my dentist wants me to get a root canal. But I heard that the nerve will have to be num in order for the root canal to be done, so if the tooth didnt respond to the anesthesia then how is that supposed to happen?


Also when you get the crown on the tooth can you request a porcelin (white) tooth instead of silver??

yes definietly. i had a root canal for the back of my tooth because it had a hole and it hurt real bad when i chewed my food! He took a needle and gave me a shot on my gum to numb it and it felt like a big bump in the back of my tooth but he said that it was just me, that its like that. And plus, i had porcelain tooth instead of silver :) even without asking so good lucK!!!anymore questions just ask me on yahoo. Oh yea, it doesnt hurt but it was painful to keep my jaw open! lol and they use this tubet o sck out the saliva! :)

Reply:I have never heard of a tooth not becoming numb from the local anethesia... Yes, you want the tooth to be numb because with a root canal, they are taking out the nerve and it will hurt like HELL if you aren't numb.





Most crowns are white... I don't think they really do silver crowns anymore.





BTW: make sure that he gives you pain medication for your recovery after the root canal. My sister just had one done like 3 wks ago, and they did not give her any medication and she was in so much pain.. (she called and got them to call in a script though). Some doctors don't volunteer med's anymore-so request some.

numb enough so that you don't feel it.
Reply:They will be able to get you numb. Also ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and you will be MUCH more comfortable. If you are really concerned, go to an endodontist instead of a regular dentist. Endodontists specialize in root canals and really know what they're doing. You don't have to have crown after a root canal - you can just get a filling unless there isn't enough tooth left to hold a filling well. Not only will they give you a white crown, they will custom match it to the color of the rest of your teeth so it looks very natural.
Reply:ive had several root canals and believe me with all the shots they give u it will become numB.. and you can request whatever color tooth u want as long as u pay for it

Once I didn't get numbed and my dentist put some medicine on my tooth and told me to come back in a few weeks.

Also for the root canal, I think the root is already dead! But am not sure about it.


Yep you could ask for white crowns. I think they only put white ones now a days! But I do remember the silver ones when I was a kid.
