Root canal?

i think i might need a root canal. i got my tooth filled about one month ago. it wasn't hurting for three weeks. and now im getting these bad toothaches. the dentist said if i get toothaches, i may need a root canal. what do you think? does it hurt if you get novicane? can you feel it? do you bleed a lot?

Root canal?
Let me tell you my story. I had to have an emergency one on Fri. In Sept. a filling fell out I did nothing. Then it started to hurt I still did nothing. Friday I woke up to my left side of my face a balloon. And hurt like nothing I have ever felt before. So I had to have an emergency root canal. It didn't hurt not at all. But my tooth had developed an abscess and that is what the bulge was and it wouldn't drain. So all weekend I had this pain full bulge and am on antibiotics like 5 x a day. this is no fun so don't let it go.

I can't say enough don't let it go. the root canal itself was nothing but everything else (the bad infection) is killing me with pain. Thursday night I was fine fri am I wanted to die!
Reply:a root canal isn't as bad as most make it out to be... it's a normal shot, like for a filling, but they cut the top of the tooth off and yank the roots, then put a temp 'crown' on top until the one made for you comes in.

take a day off work aftewards, get some pain killers, and just relax...
Reply:I would get the gas, then it really isn't that bad, and im terrified of the dentist!!
Reply:It doesn't hurt to get Novocaine and it's really necessary in a root canal. Bleeding shouldn't be a problem. It will hurt for awhile and probably swell a little. Has the dentist actually examined the tooth or did you phone him?
Reply:You don't feel it if they use novacaine but you may feel the novacaine shot, unless they numb the area 1st, which they usually do now. You don't bleed a lot. However, you may want to consider a different dentist. The dentist you saw should have correctly diagnosed and treated the problem in the first place. I'm wondering if he didn't mess up something, causing the toothache?
Reply:If your dentist is good at what he does then he will numb your gums and whole mouth so you will not feel a thing. Go back to him and have him X-ray the area you are feeling the pain, you might have a cavity in another tooth that is bothering you. I never had a root canal, but I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled and another tooth pulled. The last tooth I had pulled broke in two pieces when the dentist was trying to pull it, so he got like half of it out and then needed to pull the other part out. Only hurt a little bit since the roots were wrapped around my jaw bone.
Reply:I've had a few root canals. It can take time so I find it uncomfortable keeping my (small) mouth open for work, but if you have jabs there is no reason for it to be painful (apart from the jabs themselves that I don't like!). No bleeding.

The good thing with root canal is that tooth can't give you toothache again. The bad thing is that removing the root effectively leaves you with a dead tooth that is more likely to become brittle and break over the years.
Reply:The worst part about root canal is waiting for the nerve in the tooth to die first. If your dentist thinks you are near that point and can get root canal now with Novocaine, then it's good news. There shouldn't be much bleeding, and they'll give you a temporary crown while you wait for the lab to make you a new one. I've had something like 4 root canals. It's no big deal.
Reply:It should not hurt though there will be some discomfort during the procedure. Most of that discomfort will be from the sounds of the drill and smell, and feelings of pressure. Having had several root canals only once did I experiance really bad pain during the procedure, and that was because I put it off too long and the nerves in my tooth were somewhat dead which means that no novacaine could reach all the nerves in my teeth. So dont put it off it will only make it worse. Try to relax in the chair. For me the worst part is not being able to see what the dentist is doing and being tensed up because I am anticipating pain. If you do feel discomfort tell your dentist and they should happily be willing to apply more novacaine. I know it sounds scary but you will be fine. Just dont put it off for a couple of years or so.
Reply:if u get novacaine its all goood.....good luck!!
Reply:It sounds like your tooth may be breaking down and may need endodontic treatment(Root Canal). The dentist should be able to tell by an x-ray and clinical tests on the tooth. If endo(RCT) is needed its not bad at all.. Its like having a filling done but about 45 minutes to complete. Afterwards the tooth will be tender from them working on it but with Advil, Aleve or motrin (up to 800mg) every 4-6 hours it will be better within a days time. Be careful who you go to....alot of general dentists say they can do them and they really do have the equipement or expertise, if you can go to a specialist (Endodontic specialist) only does rootcanals...
