Root canal?

k so.. i didnt take my meds and my tooth is still infected. im supposed to have a root canal in 2 hours. i know that they cant give you a root canal if the tooth is still infected sooo can the dentist just tell by looking at it? he's a new dentist also..

Root canal?
The first three answers are terrible. Yes you can still have the root canal done. Unlike two of the answers root canals are a viable option. They do fail approximately 10-20% of the time (meaning the tooth would need retreatment or extraction). The percentage is based on the experience of the dentist and isolation of the tooth. People also don't often realize that a root canal tooth can still decay (plus often people get root canals because they have decay and don't brush well...this lack of hygiene doesn't change by getting a root canal done)

As for the infection I agree with the dentist above...it can be very difficult to get numb with existing infection...however I disagree with the rest of the dentists comments. Infection won't spread due to the procedure....if it did spread it wouldn't be due to the root canl being done. If anything the rooth canal medicine (sodium hypoclorite) would clean and disinfect the tooth making it easier for your body to handle the infection that may have spread outside the tooth. This does not mean I recommend not taking your antibiotic...dental infection is serious and can be life threatening and you are playing with fire not taking it.

good luck with the canal treatment
Reply:Hi,

You are probably already at the dentist, so you won't see this...... Some people say that it is better to loose the tooth rather than have a root canal. Alternative medical personnel say root canals are not good for you at all. If you have time you might research this. I would never have one.
Reply:Is that the only choice you have?

There's no way to get rid of the infection by medication? Not even a chance to try?

I've had a few root canals. I ended up loosing every tooth about 10 or so years later. Just those root canal teeth. I had two on one side of my mouth and one on the other side. Now, they are gone.

They want the money for the root canals. I'd ask strongly if it was anyway to get rid of the infection by medication. If I'd take it religiously? Maybe, it would save your teeth later.

It doesn't hurt to ask.
