Root canal?

I am 14 years old and my dentist told me that the 2 teeth that I chipped became 2 root canal and now I am really scared to get them fixed can you guys tell

Root canal?
As a dentist I can tell you that you have nothing to worry about. A root canal is a very painless procedure, your dentist will numb you gum with a Lidocaine injection that will block the nerve from feeling any pain. The shot itself is rather painless too, most people compare it to a slight pinch or bee sting. You may have some soreness after your root canal, but it is nothing to worry about. Just relax and take a deep breath and you will be fine. Good Luck!
Reply:Just had one done last week. Painless. It just takes a long time to complete.
Reply:it doesnt hurt! i just had one last week. at first the dentist drills the tooth just like a regular cavity, then he takes out the nerve with needle-like thingies. but i promise it wont hurt you one bit since you will have local anesthesia [novacaine]. good luck
Reply:Root canals are no big deal. I was actually bored during mine.
Reply:Root canal are not that scarry as what you think they are! However, it depends on how gentle your dentist is.I hope your parents are paying for it for they are expensive dental procedure...with crown and root canal procedure I am estimating around $ 1200-1400 is the total cost minus the coverage of your insurrance.

Good Luck!

Root canal?

I have to have a root canal done because of a absess tooth. I have never had one done before and I am kind of scared, what should a be prepared for? please don't scare me or give me ignorant comments, I am really needing a friend right now to help me through this and prepare me ok.

Root canal?
You will be given some injections to numb your mouth. It will take awhile for it to take effect enough for the procedure. The procedure is to remove the roots from your tooth. You may or may not have a plastic dam put in your mouth so that only the tooth being worked on is exposed. (for me this dam is the worse part of the procedure because it makes it hard for me to breath). Then the dentist will drill out the tooth and remove all of the nerves. Then you will be fitted for a cap and have a temporary cap put on. When you go back, the temp will be removed and the permanent fitted. It usually takes some adjusting so it can take awhile. Be sure to ask the dentist for something to manage the pain when you leave from the initial root canal. It is a little uncomfortable, but not really painful. The novacaine shots can hurt the most.
Reply:I agree with the poster above. I had a root canal done last year on my molar, and actually need one done on my other molar. The two things that would annoy you the most are getting the shot and the time that it takes to get done. I'm impatient, so I wanted that mess done as quick as possible! LOL! Mine took a total time of 1 hour and 10 minutes; Yours may take more or less, depending on your situation. you may get yours done in 1 visit, or you may need 2 visits, again depending on your case.

Overall, the whole procedure is annoying more than anything, becuase you will want it to hurry up and be over with. even after mine was done and the numbness wore off, I basically had no pain, although I took an Advil just in case. But I kind of have a high tolerance for pain. That may or may not be true for you.

Just read all the info you can on the procedure; you'll be alright.
Reply:those do really feel uncomfortable, and after the dentist takes out the biggest tooth, he'll give you some pain meds, they will relieve the pain, but don't eat anything sweet

Root canal?

i had my root canal done last week, why do i feel like i have a clump of concrete in back of my front tooth, and why is it sharp....sharp enough to cut my tounge on.

Root canal?
If the dentist did not complete the root canal (sometimes they will do it in 2 visits), then it could be temporary filling material. Since they will be reopening the area, it may not be as smooth as a regular filling.

If the root canal is complete, or if you can't stand the feeling on your tooth, call the dentist and have him smooth it (at no cost!!).
Reply:You should see the advice of a professional doctor for such a problem.

Root canal?

I had a root-canal about a month ago.Ever since then I cannot for the life of me get floss in between the teeth on both sides of the specific tooth. This is bothering me as I believe you have to floss between a tooth to keep it clean

Root canal?
Did you get a crown on the tooth? If so, go back to the dentist and tell him to fix it. You should be able to floss with no problems. However, if all he did was the root canal, then you shouldn't have a problem at all. Can you thread the floss using a floss threader at the gum line?

Root canal!!!!?

I need to go in for a root canal but I have never had one...so what should I expect?? I hate going to the dentist!!

Root canal!!!!?
I have had a root canal. First there is NO NO NO pain, a little soreness from being pushed around afterwards, but no real pain.

It will probably take about an hour or so to do the first visit. The first visit, they will drill into your root, and remove the infected tissue. The worst part of the whole experience is the sound. The drill makes a very unique sound that sounds horrible. Remember you can't feel any pain, only pressure so it's not bad, just sounds horrible. I won't ruin the pleasure of experience the sound for the first time for you.

The second time (after about 4 weeks), it's even easier. They remove the filler from your tooth (you have no nerve, so there's no pain, just pressure). and cap it. It's not painful, no pain afterwards. Just takes about an hour to do

Good luck, and don't be too nervous. Cause there is no pain.
Reply:First of all..once you realize that (I hope this doesn't come across as harsh) the reason you are needing the root canal is simply that. It is really no big deal. We used to tell the patients ..it is like having a filling done with some extras thrown in. I would recommend if you really are dreading this to consider going to an endodontist. All he does is root canals and the like..and most times..it is an hour visit from start to finish in the endo's chair. At the dentist..depending on what tooth it is it could be one, two or sometime three visits for a molar. It is UP to you..but why be numbed many more visits..you are already AFRAID to go.

I wish you well.

Root Canal?

is it true that the tooth where u do a root canal will eventually with time have to be pulled out?

Root Canal?
A root canal is an attempt to save a compromised tooth. Sometimes they fail and the tooth is lost.

However, if a crown and post-buildup is placed onto the treated tooth, it has a good chance of lasting a long time. The post gives the tooth stability and the crown protects and strengthens it.

Left unfinished, a root-canal treated tooth will become brittle and eventually break.

Missing teeth cause problems in your mouth. It's better to save them than to pull them, if at all possible.
Reply:i have never heard that, but it may be true, ask your dentist
Reply:in some cases no... but most cases eventually it will have to be given a crown, because all in all that tooth has no nerves, which means it's dead and the hole they drill into it to get the nerves out gets filled with filling and usually it is temporary until you get a crown on it.
Reply:No, not necessarily if you put a crown on the root canal tooth to give it support, because the tooth is dead and more brittle and can break, split all those things that would cause you to have to have the tooth pulled. So with a crown and regular check-ups there is no reason why you shouldn't keep the tooth for a very long time.
Reply:Not necessarily. But most likely you will need a crown every few years.
Reply:I usually consider root canal treatment to be a life-time fix and most of the time, it is - IF!!! IF you get the treatment completed and then follow through with your dentist's restorative recommendation. Most back teeth should have crowns placed once they have had root canal treatment.

I have many patients in my practice who had root canal treatments done by my dad before I even became a dentist - 30 years ago - and they still have those teeth.

Root canal?

on friday i had the 1st part of a root canal done in a tooth that has a permanent crown on it. the doctor told me i would probably be sore for 2-3 days, but the pain should decrease and not be as bad as before the procedure. on friday and sat i felt horrible and my whole jaw was sore, i presume from the shots and holding my mouth open for 1 1/2 hrs. on sunday i felt better and about noon i suddenly got this pain in my tooth that i can only explain by saying it felt like an electric shock. it lasted only a second, but hurt like hell and made my mouth salivate a lot. afterwards my entire jaw hurt so much i had to take a pain pill. today, its monday and i have noticed my jaw hurts and the tooth hurts just like before the procedure. i go back Dec 11th to have the 2nd part done. is this normal??

Root canal?
I've had a root canal and it doesn't sound normal to me. I would call the dentist and explain your pain. They may want you to come in early. Trust me, you don't want to go through the holiday with your mouth hurting!

Good luck! :)
Reply:Deffinetly call your Dentist. The Dentist should be more than glad to take any worry you have. I hope all is okay and you can have your tooth feeling great by Thanksgiving!
Reply:YOUR DENTIST PROBABLY WANTED TO WAIT TO SEE IF THE INFECTION HAD CLEARED UP BEFORE HE FINISHED. WELL, AS YOU CAN NOW TELL, NOT ALL IS FINE. IT'S A LONG TIME TO WAIT UNTIL DEC. 12. GO BACK AS AN EMERGENCY PATIENT A.S.A.P. TO HAVE THIS TAKEN CARE OF.

Root canal...?

should there be any pain at all after a root canal?

after a little over a month, i mean.

Root canal...?
Mayeb alittle bit of sensitivity, but shouldn't be a lot of pain. My mother had one, and it didn't take so she ended up having her tooth pulled. If it is still hurting I would consult a dentist to have it checked.
Reply:You shouldn't feel anything from that tooth after a root canal. They may have left one canal untreated. YOu'd better go back to the dentist who did it.
Reply:yes yes yes.

but it will go away

mine took a while also.
Reply:If any nerve was left behind...it can be aggrevated...

if it is infected...it will hurt.

I'm thinking you need to go back and find out what's up.
Reply:You can still have some pain and sensitivity, but it shouldn't be constant. I had more pain after my crown was placed than I did after my root canal.

I would check in with the dentist and ask him to take an x-ray to make sure all is OK.
Reply:Pain from root canal can be real or phantom. My grandmother had her leg amputated many years ago. Her non-existent foot was the cause of her greatest pain for the rest of her life.
Reply:it pains at times. try to avoid the foods that tends to hurt u.thats' what i didi whe i had my root canal. if this does't help go to the dentist who terated u
Reply:During the root canal process, if local anesthesia has been administered there will be no pain. But the process involves keeping your mouth wide open for an hour or two, so you may have mild pain in those muscles for a couple of days. Additionally, if the temporary filling administered after root canal may cause some pain until it is removed prior to administering permanent filling and crown.
Reply:a root canel takes a while to heal and they hurt like hell take care and be good

Root canal?

I am in the process of having a root canal done again because it failed the first time. The dentist doesnt know why it failed the xrays were fine and antibiotics didnt help so there was no infection either. Now that he has removed the treatment and put a temporary filling on the tooth there is no pain at all in that tooth.

Which is all good but surely when he does it again it will start hurting again because he will do the same as last time as he doesnt know what went wrong last time in order to correct it this time?

Root canal?
A common reason why Root canals fail is because they were not sealed well enough, when the dentist refills the canals he use GP points, these go into the canals and a permanent filling then goes on top, if the canal is not sealed properly, saliva and bacteria leak into the canal and can trigger off an infection and if a course of antibiotics dont work the work has to be done.

An xray is normally taken after the procedure so the dentist can see if the canals have been sealed!

As for the pain, you shouldn't really feel any, if he has removed all of the nerve, some times a small piece of nerve may have been left behind because it was to deep in the canal for the dentist to get to, my dentist uses an Apex Locate which beeps when he has reached the end of the apex and he knows he has gone as far as he can go and that all of the nerve has successfully been removed.

If you do suffer any discomfort after the procedure take your normal pain killers.
Reply:before I got dentures, i researched root canal.,,, it is very common for the inner filling to shrink a little, infections get in and you have to do it again. very common your dentist knows that. but he or she will make a great deal more money if you got root canal instead of extraction.

sorry that is how it works. there are reference books available in the library on old fillings and root canal issues. I am considering dental implants eventually if i can afford them as my denture are an annoyance at times. and i am unable to eat with them at all.
Reply:i had a canal filling a few yrs ago, it was successful, but ***** feel anything after, my tooth i was told would be weaker, and it eventually broke and now its removed, i dont envy you, its a horrible experience
Reply:I am sorry that yours for some reason didn't work,i have quite a few post crowns and to have these you must have the root removed i have to say that i do have a very good dentist and he looks after my mouth.I do hope things work out for you.

Root canal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

how do you brush your teeth right after you get a root canal?

Root canal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
You can brush them normally. If you don't have a crown yet, then you have one of two things: a temporary filling until the tooth can be further restored. This isn't as hard as a permanent filling but will still stand up to brushing and softer foods. Or you have what is called a core buildup, or the filling before a crown. This is the regular hard filling used to fill cavities, and will stand up to anything your teeth can.
Reply:With a toothbrush and tooth paste.

Root canal?

I just had one and I still feel pain in my nerve. Aren't they supposed to take the nerve out. My dentist is always so busy, I didn't get to talk to him after my surgery. He hasn't sapped the tooth yet. Should I ask him to see an xray. I should not have to pay for a root canal if I still feel pain. Is it possible that I may have to live with this pain?

Root canal?
endeavouring root canal treatment is to save your tooth and at the same time to make you comfortable.pain may exists from spread of inflammation to surrounding areas.however your dentist should have apprised you everything beforehead so that you dont feel insecured
Reply:No, you will not have to live with the pain. Most likely there is some infection around the wound. Antibiotics should take care of it. Definitely get it taken care of before the tooth is capped.

Root canal?

i had tooth canal done one my front upper four teeth...and got fitted with temporay crowns.2 weeks ago..finally last saturday before 2 weeks getting over, they started been sensitive to whatever i eat or drink, rather cold or warm..and if air gets in to contact with them its hurts badly for 2 or 3 second..is this normal after root canal or is it something very serious which never happen to any one

Root canal?
i believe its normal. a root canal doesn't mean your teeth won't be sensitive.
Reply:I'm not sure I'd worry about a couple seconds, but definitely if it's minutes they've missed something. Report It

Reply:You shouldn't be having problems with teeth that have had root canals. Did your regular dentist do them, or did you go to a specialist? Sometimes a regular dentist doesn't go deep enough and there is still a chance for an infection that can become sensitive.
Reply:i think u need to go back to ur dentist to check with them
Reply:Find another dentist.
Reply:i have had upper root canal also, and in this case u should really go back to your dentist beacuse if it is hurting u they have not taken the nerve out properly or they have don something really wrong beacuse i have never had that problem

Root canal?

what does it feel like when you need a root canal? I have a small dull ache on the right side of my chin. Hurts a little more when I bite. Think this sounds like a root problem or just a cavity?

Root canal?
It sounds to me like a small cavity. However, even a little decay needs to be treated right away so it doesn't get any worse. Go to your dentist, have some x-rays taken, and he'll get you fixed. From the descriptions that you're giving, it doesn't sound bad enough to need a root canal...yet...
Reply:A root canal is usually done when there is an abscess (which maybe caused by decay or trauma) or if the nerve is dead for some reason. There does not have to be decay involved. There may be pain, swelling or none of the above when a root canal needs to be done.

A dull ache and pain when one bites can be cause by many things. A tooth that is cracked, has a periodontal abscess, clinching or grinding your teeth, periodontal problems, decay and so on.

Go to a dentist. It is the only why to find out for sure what the problem is. It is difficult to make an accurate diagnosis unless there can be an examination and x-rays. The sooner the better, if there is a problem it needs to be dealt with before it becomes worse.
Reply:This sounds more like a small cavity. If you needed a root canal then you tooth would be sensitive to hot, cold, pressure, keeps you awake or wakes you up, and even swelling. The pain you feel with a tooth that needed a root canal is a throbbing pain almost like you can feel your heart beating in your tooth.

Root canal?

Since I got pregnant (8 weeks along) 2 of my teeth have cracked open with holes in them- exposing the roots. The pain is almost unbearable at times- I'm pretty sure i'll at least need a root canal? Can I have one done during pregnancy? And if not- anyone know what else they might be able to do? I hate the thought of having to get meds while pregnant-- but the pain is horrible!

Root canal?
yes it is safe, i have just had my teeth fixed due to major problems as well
Reply:Yes you can. Actually the more children you have the worse your teeth get. Pregnancy's drain everything from your teeth so make sure you take very good care of them.
Reply:You have basically 2 options... first being go to the dentist and get it taken care of or go to your local drugstore and get the temporary filling stuff and just keep using that. I did that with my last pregnancy and I had my dental work taken care of afterwards. The stuff comes in a teeney tiny plastic container and it's only 4.50. Hope that helped.

edit...the pain is coming from the root being exposed so once it is covered it will not bother you.
Reply:Not an expert, but with a local anesthetic, I cannot imagine it going into the placenta. I don't think it goes into the blood stream or else wouldn't it cause numbness all around the body? See what I mean about the local staying local?

My doctor had a little computer that told me if a drug was going to be ok or not. But those were prescription drugs not anesthetics for root canals. Call your endodontist tomorrow and have him give you some help. But honestly I think you need a root canal or you may get some kind of tooth infection.
Reply:you might just have a crown put on in which case there are no drugs aside from the local anesthetic. I had a crown put on one of my teeth because it was cracked and I was preg and it was fine

Root Canal?

Im Having Root Canal Done Next Week, What I'd Like to know...

Is It painful?

Are You awake When It's Done?

How Long Does It take To Recover?

Any Help From Professionals Would be Appreciated...

Root Canal?
I'm not a dentist, but I've had three root canals. Dental problems run in my family. Generally, getting a filling is more painful than a root canal. You are awake while it's being done, and it's kind of an odd experience. I would bring my ipod and just zone out. I was able to drive myself home after, and I am usually a little sore for a week or two. After that it should be fine!
Reply:Getting a root canal can be different for each individual. Is it painful? Sometimes the dentist may not get the tooth and periphery completely numb - which is normal. He or she will give you another injection and when everything is numb, he or she will continue. Most likely you'll be awake during the procedure. Recovery time differs with the tooth and the patient. Some patients report no problems after the lidocaine wears off. Some patients have said that it's a little bit sensitive around the tooth. Both scenarios can happen. Your dentist would most likely give you a script for some Motrin to help you with any sensitivity
Reply:Normally almost no pain. But not always a sucess. Is done with local injection. Most of the time you can not tell you had it done . Doc W
Reply:ive had this a few times. you wont feel anything cos the dentist will give you a local. it is a bit invasive though, especially if the tooth is not at the front and theres a lot of poking and pulling. you will need to keep your mouth open wide for an uncomfortable length of time and there will be a lot of equipment going in and out of your mouth. after the local wears off you might have a little or a lot of pain, so make sure to have some strong painkillers in stock. also, it may take a few sessions to complete all the roots in the tooth, so you might go through this procedure a few times. good luck.

Root canal?

how bad does a root canal hurt?

Root canal?
I just had two done recently and two done about four years ago and this time was way less painful. The worst part is having to keep your mouth open for an extended period of time, your jaw will be sore. Also eat before because I was numb and could not eat for about two hours after (and it took about an hour to do), i was so hungry when I left and had to wait to eat.
Reply:IT HURTS!!
Reply:The mouth is numbed completely so no pain during the procedure. The procedure is lengthy though and that can be uncomfortable. Once the root canal is over no root in the tooth to cause pain but the jaw can be sore and ache for a couple days.
Reply:The thought of the root canal is much worse than actually having it done. When I had mine done I only had pain when I got the novacaine. The process once the root is removed is very easy and not painful at all. Be sure to tell the dentist that you are uneasy and want no pain.
Reply:There is not a clear-cut answer to this question. Every person reacts differently to the different methods of numbing. For some people a couple of shots works and for other, like myself, no amount of numbing works so I have to be put under with IV sedation. After the fact there is some discomfort but if you take your meds and keep the area moisturized to avoid dry socket it's not too bad.
Reply:Ask them to gas you... you cannot eat anything 12 hours before you go in. You wake up and everything is done and you don't remember a thing. Some times the shots they give you to numb you hurt worse. Best of luck.
Reply:It sucks more afterwards from what I have heard. You can handle it you freaking gangsta.
Reply:Getting the novocain is the most painful part. After the dentist is through, you might have some discomfort in the muscles around your mouth just from having it open and worked on. The dentist will most likely give you some pain medication, but you might well not need it.
Reply:Actually, to clarify a little, when you have a root canal done, the dentist removes the NERVE from the root, NOT the root itself. The only pain you should have is from the injection, and your jaw will probably be sore.
Reply:just to clear things up that another poster said, they do not remove the root in a root canal - just the nerve/nerves located in the root. if they removed the root, then the tooth would be attached to nothing, and would just sit on top of your gums.

Root Canal...?

Hi i have been told i need a root canal, im booked in for thursday but im in pain now, obviously i cant get to the dentist until monday, so can anyone reccommend a way to relive the pain until monday. Im currently using over the counter tooth ache relief and extra strength asprin but these are not really working. Please help

Root Canal...?
I just recently had a root canal 3 weeks ago and I know the severe pain you are in. The only thing that helped me was vicodin. But I am sure you probably dont have one of those hanging around. Try buying Ibprofin aka motrin. double dose to 600mg and it will help with the pain. Make sure to eat something when you take it cause it might give you an upset stomach. But other than that good luck until you get it taken out. And by the way once they take it out you will have to go get a crown over your tooth. I know it sounds like a lot to deal with but once its done you will feel so much better.
Reply:Try Aleve over the counter medicine and don't chew on that side till you see the dentist. I feel your pain......hang in there.
Reply:try very cold water it worked for me 3 or 4 times
Reply:The one thing that works for me for just about any kind of pain is ibuprofin (Advil, Motrin), which is an antiinflammatory. The normal dose is two 200-mg tablets, but they make a prescription strength that is 800 mg. So I'll take four 200-mg tablets for those times when I've got bad pain somewhere. You have to watch out for stomach upset though, so I wouldn't take it on an empty stomach. I doubt that it would completely kill your pain (tooth pain can be bad, as you know), but it may really help to take the edge off. Good luck and hang in there!
Reply:First of all, I would check the other alternatives to a root canal. I've been told twice that I need one but have dealt with it by having the tooth pulled. It was in the back of my mouth so won't show. Only $85 and no more problems! Anyway, for now, you can try clove oil. It is available at health food stores. It is what my dentist uses for intense pain.
Reply:I work for an endodontist (root canal specialist) this is what we tell all of of our patinets to do...piggy back advil and tylenol. First take 3 advil (which equals 1 600mg perscription strength ibruprofin) then 2 hours later take 2 tylenol, two hours later 3 advil....so on and so forth. Advil is a great anti- inflammatory and it works best for toothaches,,even if you chose not to take both, then take the advil..i hope you feel better.
Reply:If you are not on an antibiotic, maybe you should get a hold of either your dentist or the person you are scheduled with to do the root canal and see if you should have a prescription for an antibiotic in case the tooth is abcessed. Advil Liquid Gels (3-4) seems to help me more than aspirin.
Reply:You may want to see if they can re-xray it tomorrow. Although Penicillin is a good antibiotic, maybe it's not helping with your infection and you're getting an abscess. Sometimes "anaerobic" bacteria can be the main culprit of the infection %26amp; they'd have to prescribe something else like Metronidazole.
Reply:I would call the dentist he would probably call in something for you you may have an abcess and you will need antibiotics .

Root canal =(?

Hello, my lower left 18 molar needs a root canal, but the whole treatment with the canal, build up, and crown cost way too much money. are there any other alternatives after the canal treatment besides build up and crown?

Root canal =(?
If you do the root canal, you have to do the build up and crown or the tooth will eventually fracture. Sticking an amalgam or composite filling in a root canal tooth is the recipe for eventual disaster. The other options discussed, extraction and tooth replacement with an implant is far more expensive.
Reply:The alternative way is to get the tooth removed. root canal procedures for molars are the priciest and usually the most common place to occur. The reason most likely why you need a root canal, probably because there is a cavity in that tooth that has gone too deep. If you don't get a root canal, the acid-producing bacteria will continue to eat away at the tooth, and eventually you will have to remove the tooth anyway. Root canal is the best way to save the tooth, even though it costs a lot. Also, if you do decide to go through with the procedure, make sure you get a crown immediately, or else it would be a waste of money. If a crown is not placed within weeks, or longer, it will eventually have to get it removed by general dentist or oral surgeon.
Reply:What the previous answerer forgot to add is that if you have the tooth removed you will need to havea bridge or an implant , otherwise your other teeth will start to move a lot which will end up costing you more in the long run. By the way, bridges and implants are waaaaaay more expensive than root canals and crowns.
Reply:Dental implants may be a more expensive procedure but the implant company we use (Nobel Biocare) offers a guarantee on their work( the dentist I work for will do the same) At least look into implants in order to best way your options. Root canals can fail and you'll have to pay for it again and again.

Root Canal?

My tooth refused to become num for a filling and my dentist wants me to get a root canal. But I heard that the nerve will have to be num in order for the root canal to be done, so if the tooth didnt respond to the anesthesia then how is that supposed to happen?

Also when you get the crown on the tooth can you request a porcelin (white) tooth instead of silver??

Root Canal?
yes definietly. i had a root canal for the back of my tooth because it had a hole and it hurt real bad when i chewed my food! He took a needle and gave me a shot on my gum to numb it and it felt like a big bump in the back of my tooth but he said that it was just me, that its like that. And plus, i had porcelain tooth instead of silver :) even without asking so good lucK!!!anymore questions just ask me on yahoo. Oh yea, it doesnt hurt but it was painful to keep my jaw open! lol and they use this tubet o sck out the saliva! :)
Reply:on yahoo messenger. Mine is suqaxd Report It

Reply:Why numb the tooth?

For a truly memorable experience, try it natural, without the pain killer!
Reply:I have never heard of a tooth not becoming numb from the local anethesia... Yes, you want the tooth to be numb because with a root canal, they are taking out the nerve and it will hurt like HELL if you aren't numb.

Most crowns are white... I don't think they really do silver crowns anymore.

BTW: make sure that he gives you pain medication for your recovery after the root canal. My sister just had one done like 3 wks ago, and they did not give her any medication and she was in so much pain.. (she called and got them to call in a script though). Some doctors don't volunteer med's anymore-so request some.
Reply:Now a days they only use porcelean crowns. As for the root canal I would go to an endodontis. They will be able to get you

numb enough so that you don't feel it.
Reply:They will be able to get you numb. Also ask for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and you will be MUCH more comfortable. If you are really concerned, go to an endodontist instead of a regular dentist. Endodontists specialize in root canals and really know what they're doing. You don't have to have crown after a root canal - you can just get a filling unless there isn't enough tooth left to hold a filling well. Not only will they give you a white crown, they will custom match it to the color of the rest of your teeth so it looks very natural.
Reply:ive had several root canals and believe me with all the shots they give u it will become numB.. and you can request whatever color tooth u want as long as u pay for it
Reply:They will eventually get you numbed!

Once I didn't get numbed and my dentist put some medicine on my tooth and told me to come back in a few weeks.

It worked.

Also for the root canal, I think the root is already dead! But am not sure about it.

Yep you could ask for white crowns. I think they only put white ones now a days! But I do remember the silver ones when I was a kid.

Root canal?

i think i might need a root canal. i got my tooth filled about one month ago. it wasn't hurting for three weeks. and now im getting these bad toothaches. the dentist said if i get toothaches, i may need a root canal. what do you think? does it hurt if you get novicane? can you feel it? do you bleed a lot?

Root canal?
Let me tell you my story. I had to have an emergency one on Fri. In Sept. a filling fell out I did nothing. Then it started to hurt I still did nothing. Friday I woke up to my left side of my face a balloon. And hurt like nothing I have ever felt before. So I had to have an emergency root canal. It didn't hurt not at all. But my tooth had developed an abscess and that is what the bulge was and it wouldn't drain. So all weekend I had this pain full bulge and am on antibiotics like 5 x a day. this is no fun so don't let it go.

I can't say enough don't let it go. the root canal itself was nothing but everything else (the bad infection) is killing me with pain. Thursday night I was fine fri am I wanted to die!
Reply:a root canal isn't as bad as most make it out to be... it's a normal shot, like for a filling, but they cut the top of the tooth off and yank the roots, then put a temp 'crown' on top until the one made for you comes in.

take a day off work aftewards, get some pain killers, and just relax...
Reply:I would get the gas, then it really isn't that bad, and im terrified of the dentist!!
Reply:It doesn't hurt to get Novocaine and it's really necessary in a root canal. Bleeding shouldn't be a problem. It will hurt for awhile and probably swell a little. Has the dentist actually examined the tooth or did you phone him?
Reply:You don't feel it if they use novacaine but you may feel the novacaine shot, unless they numb the area 1st, which they usually do now. You don't bleed a lot. However, you may want to consider a different dentist. The dentist you saw should have correctly diagnosed and treated the problem in the first place. I'm wondering if he didn't mess up something, causing the toothache?
Reply:If your dentist is good at what he does then he will numb your gums and whole mouth so you will not feel a thing. Go back to him and have him X-ray the area you are feeling the pain, you might have a cavity in another tooth that is bothering you. I never had a root canal, but I had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled and another tooth pulled. The last tooth I had pulled broke in two pieces when the dentist was trying to pull it, so he got like half of it out and then needed to pull the other part out. Only hurt a little bit since the roots were wrapped around my jaw bone.
Reply:I've had a few root canals. It can take time so I find it uncomfortable keeping my (small) mouth open for work, but if you have jabs there is no reason for it to be painful (apart from the jabs themselves that I don't like!). No bleeding.

The good thing with root canal is that tooth can't give you toothache again. The bad thing is that removing the root effectively leaves you with a dead tooth that is more likely to become brittle and break over the years.
Reply:The worst part about root canal is waiting for the nerve in the tooth to die first. If your dentist thinks you are near that point and can get root canal now with Novocaine, then it's good news. There shouldn't be much bleeding, and they'll give you a temporary crown while you wait for the lab to make you a new one. I've had something like 4 root canals. It's no big deal.
Reply:It should not hurt though there will be some discomfort during the procedure. Most of that discomfort will be from the sounds of the drill and smell, and feelings of pressure. Having had several root canals only once did I experiance really bad pain during the procedure, and that was because I put it off too long and the nerves in my tooth were somewhat dead which means that no novacaine could reach all the nerves in my teeth. So dont put it off it will only make it worse. Try to relax in the chair. For me the worst part is not being able to see what the dentist is doing and being tensed up because I am anticipating pain. If you do feel discomfort tell your dentist and they should happily be willing to apply more novacaine. I know it sounds scary but you will be fine. Just dont put it off for a couple of years or so.
Reply:if u get novacaine its all goood.....good luck!!
Reply:It sounds like your tooth may be breaking down and may need endodontic treatment(Root Canal). The dentist should be able to tell by an x-ray and clinical tests on the tooth. If endo(RCT) is needed its not bad at all.. Its like having a filling done but about 45 minutes to complete. Afterwards the tooth will be tender from them working on it but with Advil, Aleve or motrin (up to 800mg) every 4-6 hours it will be better within a days time. Be careful who you go to....alot of general dentists say they can do them and they really do have the equipement or expertise, if you can go to a specialist (Endodontic specialist) only does rootcanals...

Root Canal?

My mom had been having a lot of tooth ache so she went to the dentist. He told her she needed a root canal and so she got one. Ever since she had it done she has been feeling a lot of pain in her jaw, in her neck, and all around head. The dentist doesnt know what is wrong but we are wondering if maybe an infection spread to other parts of her body. She had been giving antibiotics but nothing seems to be working. Her symptoms have only been getting worse since the root canal which was over four months ago. What could it be?

Root Canal?
If she took the full course of antibiotics (at least 10 days worth usually) and the pain started after that point, I would look at a possible reinfection, or food got in there later and infected it. Have them check / re-check thoroughly (maybe an X-ray, throat culture, possibly even a spinal tap - not to alarm you - just to rule it out %26amp; to be sure, etc.) to eliminate any other possibilities, or maybe go get a second opinion by going to an Otolaryngologist (an eye, ear, nose throat specialist), or an ENT physician. Best of Luck!!!
Reply:go to hospital, chiropractor, and allergist... could be reaction, adujustment or somthing.
Reply:Sometimes there are after effects of the injection too. There can be soreness, stiffness in the neck and face. There can even be permanent paralysis or numbness. If she takes another course of antibiotics and doesn't get relief, I would consider the fact that it could have something to do with a nerve that was compromised during the administration of the anesthesia.
Reply:She might have to see an endodontist, a root canal specialist, if the root canal doesn't heal. They can access the situation and determine if the root canal can be done over, or if maybe the roots are resorbting.. the tooth may not be saveable

Tell her to ask her DDS to send her to an endodontist for a consultation
Reply:Did the dentist treated the correct tooth that was causing the pain?

Root canal?

k so.. i didnt take my meds and my tooth is still infected. im supposed to have a root canal in 2 hours. i know that they cant give you a root canal if the tooth is still infected sooo can the dentist just tell by looking at it? he's a new dentist also..

Root canal?
The first three answers are terrible. Yes you can still have the root canal done. Unlike two of the answers root canals are a viable option. They do fail approximately 10-20% of the time (meaning the tooth would need retreatment or extraction). The percentage is based on the experience of the dentist and isolation of the tooth. People also don't often realize that a root canal tooth can still decay (plus often people get root canals because they have decay and don't brush well...this lack of hygiene doesn't change by getting a root canal done)

As for the infection I agree with the dentist above...it can be very difficult to get numb with existing infection...however I disagree with the rest of the dentists comments. Infection won't spread due to the procedure....if it did spread it wouldn't be due to the root canl being done. If anything the rooth canal medicine (sodium hypoclorite) would clean and disinfect the tooth making it easier for your body to handle the infection that may have spread outside the tooth. This does not mean I recommend not taking your antibiotic...dental infection is serious and can be life threatening and you are playing with fire not taking it.

good luck with the canal treatment
Reply:Hi,

You are probably already at the dentist, so you won't see this...... Some people say that it is better to loose the tooth rather than have a root canal. Alternative medical personnel say root canals are not good for you at all. If you have time you might research this. I would never have one.
Reply:Is that the only choice you have?

There's no way to get rid of the infection by medication? Not even a chance to try?

I've had a few root canals. I ended up loosing every tooth about 10 or so years later. Just those root canal teeth. I had two on one side of my mouth and one on the other side. Now, they are gone.

They want the money for the root canals. I'd ask strongly if it was anyway to get rid of the infection by medication. If I'd take it religiously? Maybe, it would save your teeth later.

It doesn't hurt to ask.

Root canal?

I asked a question on here a couple of days ago about a toothache and was told by two dentists that I probably need a root canal based on my symptoms.....the tooth doesn't really hurt all that much at the minute, only after I've eaten something cold it aches for a while. What would happen if I left the tooth and didn't get it fixed right away? I don't have a dentist and can't afford to go private until September. Would it be OK to wait until then?

And what's it like having a root canal done? Does it hurt?

Root canal?
Just did a root canal yesterday on a young man. 24 yrs old. He was very surprised it did not hurt. the shots hurt at the beginning of the visit. He started to fall asleep during the procedure he told his wife. Generally, however, Root canal pain get worse the longer you wait. If you wait till there is constant pain the complicaitons are worse and hence more tendency to have PAIN. The most common length of pain following a root canal is 3 days we tell our patient after that your'e good. You need to know, also, once you get a root canal you have a limited time to have a crown done on the same tooth. As far as waiting it could be OK, but if the pain starts to become constant and random last longer than 30 seconds with no stimulus. You better get it done sooner. Officially, were trained to say got get it taken care of. In reality many patients wait for job insurance to kick in. Hope it helps. . .
Reply:root canals take like 2 or 3 visits to finish and hate to tell you they suck. but until september youll definately be alright.
Reply:Lets just say u have never felt anything like it unless have had a baby.but i dont want to scare you.

Now, i wouldnt want to wait intill sept. because it's very possible it could get worse, then u might have to get it pulled.
Reply:it will get worse, I used to leave mine and I have had them then turning into abscesses, this is not a nice thing to have and hurts more than tooth ache cos painkillers don't work at all! I have lost quite a few teeth this way. ok root canal will be a little bit uncomfortable but it is worth it.

speak to your dentist about payment, he may be able to help
Reply:The only other option is to have the tooth pulled. I had to do this once when I couldn't afford the root canal. Now I have a space. - can't afford a bridge either. If you can possibly swing it get the root canal. Usually they need to cap your tooth afterward. The cap cost just as much as the roota canal. Make sure you get all your info from the dentists before you start. Some dentists will do payment plans.
Reply:if you recieved the same opinion from two dentists, chances are they are right.

When they do a root canal, they numb your gum around the tooth (u will feel a short pinch from the needle).

then they drill into ur tooth, and take the root out and replace ur root with a small metal rod to hold yur tooth in place.

you dont feel anything but pressure while gettign it done. it doesnt hurt after the novacaine.

you should be okay until september depending on how bad it is. however, if it is severe u should get it done asap before your tooth starts REALY hurting, or you loose the tooth for good!

good luck!
Reply:You have a local anaesthetic so it shouldn't hurt. Get it done as soon as possible or you could end up with an abscess which is very painful and will make the treatment painful. The sooner the better as you stand a chance of saving the tooth. Once it's pulled out it's gone forever remember.
Reply:Well,I can tell you this. If you need to have a root canal done, don't put it off if possible. The tooth can get abscessed and can cause a life threatening infection called sepsis. (SP)? My dad let a tooth get to this point and ended up passing out while driving, and had blackout periods shortly before that. Trust me,you'd rather have the root canal vs having all your teeth pulled and getting dentures. The pain will only last for a short time compared to the problems you'll incur if you don't have it fixed.
Reply:DON'T WAIT!! There is always the possibility that if you wait too long, you could lose the tooth, which is no fun. If anything, ask the dentist his opinion on how long this can wait. Root canals aren't bad....they are VERY BORING! Most root canals can be done in 1 visit that can last as long as 3 hours (faster if you go to an endodontist-a specialist that only does root canals). YOU MUST have a crown done on a tooth that has had endo because there won't be any nerve tissue left to supply blood to the tooth, causing it to become dry %26amp; brittle. Root canal teeth are notorious for cracking %26amp; then having to be taken out IF A CROWN ISN'T DONE!! I feel so frusterated with people when they invest all that money into a root canal %26amp; then don't get a crown %26amp; they end up losing the tooth. Good luck!
Reply:drink/stack lot of pin reliver if your gonna wait that long

Root Canal?

I had a root canal about 10 years ago on a tooth that has been acting up the last few months. It has been very sensitive to pressure, hot, cold, etc. It can't be a cavity because I had a root canal there. Anyone have/had the same problem or know what it could be? My dentist took x-rays and didn't see anything wrong but there is something wrong because the pain got so bad I had to go to the emergency room.

Root Canal?
When they did the root canal did they get the whole nerve out? Possibly a remnant has become infected? Perhaps you need to go beyond your dentist and discuss it with the specialist that does root canals ?
Reply:Might be an abcess or the tooth is growing everything that was removed back. Get a second opinion asap.
Reply:KRITAJA,

IT IS VERY LIKELY THAT THIS TOOTH HAS A ROOT FRACTURE. THIS WON'T SHOW UP ON AN X-RAY, BUT ONLY BY DOING SPECIFIC MEASUREMENTS WITH A PERIODONTAL PROBE AND BY REVIEW OF THE SYMPTOMS CAN THIS BE DISCOVERED.

A CONSULTATION WITH AN ENDODONTIST FOR A POTENTIAL ROOT FRACTURE IS INDICATED FOR THIS TOOTH.
Reply:A root canal is basically the removal of a tooth's living tissue, so all that's left is the enamel and dentin. The tooth itself, as I understand the procedure, is dead; so your pain is probably not in the tooth itself but in the gum tissue near the tooth. Your gum tissue may have receded enough to expose some bone and that would explain the heat %26amp; cold sensitivity.

I had a similar problem about 3 years ago. I made an emergency appointment with my dentist due to extreme pain. He took x-rays and did an examination and said nothing was wrong. The pain subsided after 2 or 3 days but once in awhile I'd get a small blister on my gum near the tooth that had been hurting. It wasn't painful, and the dentist had said nothing was wrong, so I ignored it.

During a routine cleaning about a year later, the dentist said that the tooth had 'erupted'. It got pushed up slightly from its normal position due to an infection in the gum tissue.

He sent me to a periodontist for a 2nd opinion. Options given were root canal and extraction. The periodontist said root canal was not a good option because the tooth might still have to be removed at some point in the future. So I had the tooth removed %26amp; replaced with a bridge.

The important point here is that root canal is not a permanent solution. Whatever problem there is with or near that tooth, is probably not going to heal itself and should become more obvious over the next few months; so that the dentist who said nothing is wrong, will be able to see what is wrong.

Or better yet, get a second and third opinion from different dental professionals. An untreated dental problem will most likely become more severe over time.

Root Canal?

I was at the dentisat a few days ago for a root canal. The dentist took some x_rays and came back to say that I have a Curved root I think. He sat and tried to get the pin thing in my tooth for a good 20 minutes. He took it out and said I can't get past this twisted root. He sent me to a specialist and now I'm Kind of wondering if since the first profesional couldn't do it then what says a different one can? Is a specialist a flook too? He cost about twice as much as the first guy and I was wondering if any dentists out there can Give there opinion.

Root Canal?
I've been in your shoes...my dentist in the past didn't do such a good job, then he retired and a new guy was taking over, and that one sounds exactly like your first dentist in your story, and he too sent me to some specialist that was trying to charge me a fortune on top of the first quack... I got fed up with it all and absolutely stopped letting any of that collusive team getting at me and went to find a totally new dentist... Now the one I found is great ! does it all by himself and his assistant, no scams, no conspiracies, no B.S., just pure talent and honesty, and regular fair price. You should consider the same path.
Reply:i have heard of the root even being grown to the jaw bone, so a curved root is legit but should be able to be removed
Reply:There are allot of nerves in your jaw, the doctor may not want to try too hard because there have been many cases of facial paralysis because of bad dentistry. I would pay for the specialist.
Reply:I do some of "my own" root canal treatments and I refer the harder cases to the specialist. Part of the reason I don;t refer everyone is because they DO cost more money. The difference between me and an endodontist is that they have had a couple more years training in this field that they are especially interested in (and I am not...) and they do nothing else all day, every day besides work on root canals - usually the more difficult ones. They simply get better at it than I will ever be.

If root canal treatment is not performed about 99.9% correctly, it will not be siccessful. I do the ones that are up front and easy and let the specialists earn their money on the rest.
Reply:A SPECIALIST HAS THE EQUIPMENT TO GET AROUND THOSE CURVE ROOTS AND SPECIAL OTHER STUFF TO CHECK HOW LONG YOUR ROOT IS. A DENTIST MAY NOT HAVE ALL THIS SPECIAL EQUIPMENT COS THAT NOT THE ONLY THING HE MAY DO SO ITS NOT ECONOMICAL FOR HIM TO KEEP THIS EQUIPMENT. IT IS GOOD THAT HE REFERED YOU, WOULD YOU HAVE RATHER HIM ACT LIKE HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING AND THEN RUIN YOUR TOOTH, I THINK NOT!

Root Canal????

I had a root canal done about a year and a half ago, and it started hurting about six months ago. I went to another dentist and he said the other dentist did a good job and it wasn't infected or anything. He did think that one of my other teeth might need one in the future, but he couldn't see any decay on the xray. It seems like my teeth hurt worse when i'm under stress. I'm just tired of my teeth hurting....he said he would do a root canal, but was hesitant since he couldn't see any decay. Has anyone else had this prob??

Root Canal????
You may be grinding your teeth at night. Wear a nightguard and see if that helps. You might want to set up a consult with an endodontist. These are dentists that specialize in root canals and have more advanced equipment to check and see what is wrong. If there is something wrong with the other root canal or if there is something wrong with this other tooth. Sometimes a root canal can fail even if done well. It is based on the body/immune system and healing. If the body doesn't heal properly after a root canal it can still hurt and an endodontist can treat this. Or, he can check the other tooth and tell you if it needs a root canal. Sometimes a tooth can need a root canal if the nerve dies, usually due to trauma like being hit with something or a car accident. But, if you are grinding your teeth, you may be causing the pain.
Reply:you might be a grinder at night if your teeth hurt if he didn't see any cavities. you grind your teeth probably you might need a bite guard. Ask your dentist if he sees any wear down areas on your teeth like signs of grinding if so you can buy a night guard at your local walgreens.

Root Canal?????

I was wondering where the misconception that root canals are soooooooo painful came from? ... I just had one yesterday and i don't need any pain medication or anything to help releave pain. I was wondering if someone could explain to me there experiance of having a root canal done. if it was painful or not and what kind of pain you had

Root Canal?????
everyone handles pain differently and some people just don't feel as much pain as others...I was knocked out when I had one because they did it at the same time as removing my wisdom teeth...therefore I associate the whole thing w/ a LOT of pain because I had complications from my wisdom teeth and root canals. I also have major dentist anxiety so I associate every dental procedure w/ something that freaks me out. I think you are very lucky that you had no pain =]
Reply:I've had root canal treatment and it was in no way painful...I don't understand how people think this either...
Reply:I had a root canal right before my wedding (3 days before).

It was painful after the first visit. It didn't hit me until I was driving home. Once I took some Tylenol or Ibuprofen and it got to work, I was fine and able to return to work. But it was painful. The other 2 procedures, I don't remember being too painful or uncomfortable. It's a pain.
Reply:I have had more than one root canal, and I did not find them painful either. I think that today's dentist are better equipped to perform the rootcanal and perhaps this is why it is less painful. I am not sure.
Reply:I didn't find my first root canal painful either. I guess, it's a long "sit" and requires follow up appointments. The most painful part of the experience to me was the bill $.
Reply:Witch step in the root canal did you have?

I cant beleive for one minute thay you had the root removed with no pain medication at all and felt nothing. The who reason for having it becasue you are already in pain removing the root witch is close or attached to the nerve is painfull. Once that is removed and filled then the posts are placed in it is painless becasue the root has already been removed and no pain meds are given.
Reply:I had one done about a year ago. I was terrified because I never had any major procedure done to my teeth. It wasn't bad at all! The worst part was my face being numb from the novicane for a few hours.

I think years ago they might have been more painful, but modern technology and procedures make it easy and relatively pain-free.
Reply:Well, it depends on the situation that's occurring in the mouth, I have had 4 root canals. 3 of which were great and easy going and 1 which was super painful, when I was 15, I had some pain in my mouth, my mother insisted that I was being dramatic and let it go. The pain persisted and when I finally went to the dentist I was told that I would have to have a root canal. Note: the dentist did inform my mother that if I had been brought in earlier it would have just been a cavity. So, the root canal procedure begin, I was numbed up, but I began to feel pain, the dentist stopped gave me some more pain medication, waited, and began again. There was still pain, after giving me a 3rd dose he told me that he wouldn't be able to give me anymore. (He didn't want to overdose me). He patiently wait for the drug to work and needless to say, it didn't. I remember it like yesterday. The pulsating drill plunging into my tooth, the crunching sound of my tooth being drilled and the horrible throbbing and pain, along with tears just streamed down my face. I also remember someone holding my head still. My mother felt so bad, she cried and cried. But, still not more than I did.

Root canal????

I need a root canal and I have a marilyn bridge attached to the tooth I need it on. Do you think it will break my bridge? If for some reason they can't do the root canal would they have to pull my tooth? What are some reasons they wouldn't be able to do it?

Thanks, I'm very anxious about dental work.

Root canal????
Unless a dentist removes it then yes it would most likely break. It should be removed first to prevent any further complications. The RCT will render your tooth brittle. It most advisable to get a full crown veneer to completely encapsulate your treated tooth.

If all hope fails, then it would be extracted. But extraction should be the last option to preserve it. Although there is no reason it can't be done.

Hope this helps.

Root Canal?

I'm getting a Root Canal tomorrow, and I heard they hurt!

I'm only 14 and plus I have braces. I was wondering if someone could give me advice...If you had a Root Canal done before!

Thanks! =]

Mine helped relieve the pain. It hurt worse before I had it done.
Reply:it should not be too bad- just relax

A total waste of time, rip the tooth out is cheaper and better especially if its beyond. Its a total waste of time and money if you ask me and they never do get all the root out. Its very long and painful you will find your jaw sore for many days after and probably never eat properly on that side again.
Reply:it is paiful when the poison starts draining from your mouth.it will soon be all over.oh god,im glad its not me but if u need it done,go for it
Reply:It's not that bad. Just daunting. They will put a plastic dam over your mouth...which is not painful, but annoying as hell. Pain wise, it is no worse than having a cavity filled. Don't be concerned. The pain that tooth could cause you in the future, is far less bearable than a root canal.
Reply:yes tell them you dont want to be awake and you want to record it on a recorder so you can watchit later.. if they wont let you pass out then try and dont think about it just learn to live in your head and forget about the grinding sounds coming up your jaw and into your head!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

im sorry plz dont worry i need tooth work bad but i dont have any insurace and i know its gonna be expencive and have a lot to do with pulling 4 of my teeth..and im afraid that once they pull theos 4 ill not be very smart anymore...

may yoda be one with me!
Reply:The people who have a hard time getting numb area the ones that have massive infection. (change in chemistry around the tooth doesn't allow for numbing) Most of the time, having root canals done is just plain boring for the patient, bring your iPod. If there's any pain, tell the doctor immediately. Also, afterwards, and before the anesthesia wears off, take a couple of advil. Sometimes teeth can be tender to bite on after a root canal. Usually just a day or 2, but sometimes a week or two ( though less than the first day or so)

Good luck! You'll be fine
Reply:Sweetie I'm right behind you. I go for one Wednesday.

The doctor does not give knock out shouts. (I'M) scarred.

I ask do they give laughing gas. They said yes. I told them to get ready to laugh their heads off. They're going to have to use all in the office, plus Novocaine me up.

On the serious side I plan on bring my headphones and good music and blind folds.
Reply:for me it felt fine before they messed with my teeth. but right after the numming medicine wore off, it was HELL!! im telling you the torture was so painful. i couldn't eat, i couldn't sleep. it was like getting an ear infection in my mouth. it lasted for 3 months after the root canal, and till this day, i can't chew on the left side of my mouth. there is also some gum swelling that hurts like chyt, but its alot better then the pain from 3 months ago.

your lucky if there isnt' any pain, but if there is ICE IT, AND DON'T MOVE YOUR MOUTH.

EVEN TALKING, CHEWING OR SLIGHT MOVEMENT OF THE HEAD WILL CAUSE PAIN.

.. well actualy, now that i think about it, i don't think that pain was from the root canal, but from the broncitis (biteing and genching of the teeth)

oh thats right!!! i would bite down really hard for some weird reasion after the root canal. it was just a bad habit that turned into ALOT of pain. oww... from 0-10, 0 being no pain, and 10 being leg cut of/ having a baby. i would say this was a 8.5

im just telling you from experience, hope your root canal goes good! and don't forget to brush your teeth *wink*

xoxo, cara
Reply:It's not that bad. I've had to have two, and one was completely painless. That was a tooth that got struck and injured, so the nerve was dead beforehand. The other one was a tooth that got infected, and that one did hurt, but the root canal wasn't as painful as the infected tooth. You'll be fine.
Reply:God so many people ask about root canals. I copied and pasted these steps for you. It shows all the reasons and steps for your root canal. But they do numb it with novacaine. Its a needle they put in your mouth. It just pinches.

A) Placing a rubber dam around your tooth.

After numbing your tooth but before beginning the actual process of performing the root canal treatment, your dentist will stretch a sheet of rubber around your tooth. Dentists call this sheet of rubber a "rubber dam." It is held in place by a small clamp that grasps your tooth.

The purpose of a rubber dam is as follows. Since one of the fundamental goals of root canal therapy is to clean bacteria out of a tooth, and since saliva does have bacteria in it, the placement of a rubber dam allows the dentist to keep your tooth saliva free so it doesn't get recontaminated with bacteria while your root canal treatment is being performed. B) Gaining access to the nerve area of the tooth.

As a starting point for the process of performing your root canal treatment your dentist must first gain access to that area inside the tooth where the nerve tissue resides. This is accomplished by using a dental drill and making an access hole that extends down to the pulp chamber of the tooth. On posterior teeth this hole is made on the chewing surface of the tooth. On front teeth the access hole is made on the tooth's backside. C) Cleaning the tooth out.

A root canal file. The next step of the root canal treatment process is for your dentist to clean out the interior of your tooth (the pulp chamber and all root canals). As we discussed previously, this cleaning process removes any bacteria, toxins, nerve tissue, and related debris that are harbored inside your tooth. or the most part the cleaning process is accomplished by way of using "root canal files." These objects look like straight pins but on closer inspection you would find that their surface is rough, not smooth. These instruments literally are files and are used as such. Your dentist will work a series of root canal files, each of increasing diameter, up and down in your tooth while simultaneously using a twisting motion. This action will scrape and scrub the sides of the tooth's root canal(s), thus cleaning it out. Additionally, as part of the cleaning process your dentist will wash your tooth out periodically so to help flush away any debris that is present.

The goal is for your dentist to clean the entire length of the tooth's root canal(s), but not beyond. As a means of determining the length of a canal your dentist may place a root canal file in your tooth and then take an x-ray. Once developed the x-ray picture will reveal if the file extends the full length of the canal or not. Alternatively, your dentist may have an electronic device that can make this same determination when it is touched to a file that has been positioned in a canal.

Traditionally the filing action of root canal files has been created by way of the dentist manipulating them with their fingers. There are, however, special dental drills (dental drills are called "handpieces") which can hold and twist these files, and your dentist may choose to use one. As a variation on this same theme, there is yet another type of dental handpiece that produces a cleaning motion by way of holding a root canal file and vibrating it vigorously.
Reply:I think everyone has heard that R/C treatment is painful.. My dentist gives a round of antibiotics and starts treatment when the prescription is finished. You should have no more discomfort than with a filling. If you do, tell your dentist.
Reply:I was only 9 when I had 4 root canals. But let me tell you this, they absolutely do not hurt. But maybe after your mouth might get sore for a couple of hours. If you have braces, it is going to hurt a little bit but not that much!! Hope that Helpz!
Reply:Dont be afraid. The Dentist will use Novicane and you wont feel a thing. And when it is over.....you will have something to brag about!!! Not everyone can say that he or she had a rootcanal!!!

Good luck.and ..keep smiling!!!!
Reply:i have had 2 root canals the worst thing about it was the numbing shots that hurt me the most once i got my teeth removed it was almost instance if it was not for the pain shots it would have been instant but i would not have it done with out the shots
Reply:Well i actually just had my first one done today. I went in for an emergency visit because of a severe pain in my tooth. It actually was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. As long as your dentist numbs you very good, you will be okay. Even after the numbness wore off, my gums just feel sore right now but it is nowhere near as bad as it was. They will also write you a prescription for pain killers and probably amoxicillin. The amoxicillin should clear up the remaining infection. Good luck and dont be scared it's not that bad!!
Reply:it isn't that bad during the procedure, it's really time consuming, cleaning out the bad tooth (about an hour)...afterwards there is some throbbing and its hard to eat on the side you had it done, but take an ibprofin afterwards and you should be fine. i had mine done last week.

Root Canal?

If you have had a root canal were you able to drive yourself home could you go back to work the same day of root canal

Root Canal?
yes you can drive and go to work
Reply:I did, my face was a little numb, making it hard to talk, but really the pain wasn't bad...and as soon as the side effects of the novacain wore off i was fine. Some people would prefer just to stay at home and rest though..not everyones root canals go perfectly.
Reply:Yes on both because u are only given novocaine.
Reply:No because they usually give you either a relaxant like Valium or put you out completely so you will be too spacey to drive yourself home or go back to work.

Ask your dentist if you can do it with a local anesthetic. If you can, then you will be numb, but not stoned.

I'm not sure I'd want a root canal without being asleep.
Reply:If you have local anesthetic, you will be able to drive. If you are put out, then no.
Reply:YES, YOU CAN DRIVE YOURSELF. THEY DO IT UNDER NOVOCAINE...............
Reply:Yes. Mine was no different than having a filling done, except it took longer in the chair.
Reply:Yes, I was able to drive afterwards---all they give you is Novocaine (sp?)---I had mine in the late afternoon and then went home.....I was a little sore and couldn't really eat anything for a while. I would suggest to you to have it done late afternoon and then go home and rest, but you can defiantly go to work the next day.
Reply:ive had 11 an they hurt like HELL and i got my girlfriend to drive me home and i took the day of work

sorry it will help

tmswainyboy
Reply:Ive had a couple of them and have driven myself home... albeit i was sore later, there really wasnt any problem with driving or being able to function.... basically just needed some aspirin when the novacaine wore off....... no biggie, but i wont do it again!!
Reply:Yes. I had a root canal last year and I drove myself back to work. It wasn't very painful at all. There was a tiny bit of discomfort the next day but not what everyone makes you believe. Trust me, its not as bad as it sounds. You will be fine.
Reply:It depends on tghe sedation used. You can usually drive home with novicaine, but if you take valum you cant.
Reply:Yes you can do both. It sound s like a very complicated procedure but it's not. The tooth is cleaned out, like getting to filling then the Dr. measures the length of the canal inside the jaw and takes xrays to see if the measurement is correct. After the Dr. finds the right measuements it gets filled with gutta percha(which is the name of the filling) and sealed with a temporary filling or a permanent filling-even sometimes they take the measuremnets for the crown. A root canal is not a big deal, don't even worry. You will be fine at your dental visit.
Reply:Definitely yes. As long as your dentist give you a prescription for anti-inflammatory and for pain.

Root canal?

i just found out my some friends that i might need to get root canal. i have a huge cavity that is half of my tooth this is in my back tooth. and its not really deep but its deep im so scared any help?

Root canal?
I had root canals done on me, actually I had 3 of them. It isnt that bad. All they do is givng you novacaine and then they do whatever is needed to complete the therapy. Its not that bad. After the novacaine you dont feel anything. The bad part of the therapy is sitting there all bored.

After, they put temporary fillings and to be all hoenst with you, your tooth will be sensitive and it will hurt, but they give you pain killers. They send you back to your general dentist and he'll give you permanent fillings such as silver or gold. And your done.

Root Canal Therapy has taught me one thing, if you have a cavity get it fixed right away when its still small.
Reply:Just chill out. i had to get a root canal when i was 10. i thought it was going to hurt really bad but it didnt. after that my mom bought and made me smoothies. ( this is if it started to hurt) but it didnt hurt so i just got a hole bunch of smoothies and milk shakes!

:]

Hope it helps!
Reply:I say if you don't need a root canal: don't do it. My mom had one and it screwed her mouth up so bad that it wasn't even funny. I advise you that you don't do it, but if you absolutely HAVE to- than yes.
Reply:a root canal is when the teeth is decayed by bacteria so much that it needs to be removes before it eats the gums or anything else in it

you probably need a filling

dont worry about it

even if you do have to get one you wont feel it and just have to drink liquads for awhile
Reply:I've had about five root canals so far in my life. It's not a big deal at all. What they're doing is preventing further infection and killing the nerves, preventing further pain. Dental procedures have come a long way. If you have to have one then you have to have one. It's not a big deal, believe me. I'd rather go to the Gynecologist than the Dentist. That's how much I dislike dental visits because I just don't have good teeth. You'll be fine. Just breath!
Reply:Seriously, don't freak out about it. I have had one root canal and they numb you up really good so that you don't feel anything besides pressure and vibration, and for me, the numbness lasted for about 7 hours, so i really didn't feel much discomfort after it. i didn't need any pain medication afterwards, that's how much it DIDN'T hurt.
Reply:i had one about 2 years ago.

and a second one about 1 year ago.

they don't hurt don't worry.

trust me i'm 14.

and a girl so pain wise;;

didn't hurt.

Root Canal?

I had a root canal done, and the dentist packed my tooth.

Whatever he packed it with is brushing away.

My next apt is in 2 1/2 weeks away!

It is all going to be brushed away by then!

Don't I need a crown or something?

Root Canal?
yeah...you really do need a crown. Did they forget to put it on? Call the dentist immediately!!!!
Reply:I think they usually first put the packing stuff and then wait a bit for you to get over that before they put a crown on. I know because I had a root canal done and he just put the putty filling stuff and then asked me to come back to get a crown put in.
Reply:Hi,

Typically a root canal requires two appointments. First they remove the soft tissue, begin shaping the canals and pack everything with temporary filling, then in the second appointment they finish shaping the canals pack them with the permanent rubbery stuff. After that the tooth has to be restored with a crown. Good luck, I'm up for some oral surgery because my root canal failed. I'll spare you the details :-)

Root Canal?!?

could these be signs i need a root canal?

it hurts when i brush against the area of my tooth.

i had a filling done there last year because there was a cavity but i went back because it still hurt afterwards and the dentist told me it was fine

it still hurts sometimes but its not painful pain.

what could it be?

Root Canal?!?
You may have a senitive tooth and there is tooth paste for that! Ask MD Wed
Reply:its not root canal

Root Canal?

I just got back from the dentist and had a root canal. My numbness is starting to wear off and I'm feeling a lot of pain. It doesn't feel like simple jaw pain like others have said you would feel, this is quite a lot worse; in fact, it's a bit worse than the toothache itself and THAT kept me up all night. The root canal itself went well and I felt no pain. Is this normal? What's best to ease the pain?

Root Canal?
They should have given you a pain killer. If not, then try Tylenol or Motrin; if that doesn't help, then call the office and page the doctor because you need them to call in an Rx for pain. It's normal to still feel soreness or even pain inside the tooth, and you may have sensitivity, but that all comes with having the root canal. Your nerve in your tooth has been 'filled' and your tooth has to get used to it.
Reply:Your dentist didn't perscribe any pain medication for you? Try Motrin and call your dentist and see if he/she can call anything in for you.
Reply:I have had 7 root canals and alot of porcelian veneers put in as a teenager. So the pain killers that worked the best for me was tylenol with codeine.I would go back and ask for something stronger

Root Canal?

I've had a temperature after root canal for four days now. Yet no pain. I suspect ill feeling is from root canal, as I had temperature from previous root canal treatment. Question, do I need antibiotics?

Root Canal?
antibiotics are given as a standard after every root canal by an experienced dentist. Ask for it, he should have given it to you.

the only situation that a dentist would prescribe antibiotics BEFORE a root canal is if you have a particularly nasty infection. They would then need to treat the infection before doing the root canal.

As for the fever, how high is it? If it's between 99-100 your body is reacting to the stress of having had root therapy. Seeing as how there is no pain, an infection (if present at all) would be very small.

I've had a nasty infection post-root canal and trust me, there was pain.

Take Tylenol for the fever and request antibiotics.
Reply:sorry but were not the people you should be asking.
Reply:You need to call you dentist and ask him for antibiotics.
Reply:I'm not a doctor (or a dentist for that matter); still you should call your dentist and ask. A root canal is an invasive surgery. I don't think an antibiotic would be unwarranted.
Reply:I think b4 root canal we r supposed to take antibiotics.......coz i had root canal n i had to take antibiotics b4 it.........

Root canal?!?

i have had the worst toothache for a week

and yesterday I went to the dentist and was told i needed a root canal

he put me on pentacillin and im going in tomorrow for the root canal

im really nervous about it

i can't even touch the tooth without it hurting

is a root canal going to hurt a lot?

Root canal?!?
The process of the root canal isn't that bad as long as you have a good dentist. It is after the process is done that things can be painful. I have had two root canals in a two month period ( I have to get crowns--YUCK). The first root canal was pretty much painless during and after the process. The second, everything went smoothly at the office but once the pain meds wore off the tooth was very sore from all the work that was done. It still hurt for several days after the process. Which leads me to assume that the pain is different depending on how much has to be done to the tooth to get to the root and which tooth is being worked on. Hopefully your experience will be like my first one.
Reply:If you get the right painkillers (and the right doctor), a root canal can be absolutely painless.
Reply:I have had it before. Its not that bad. Just tell him you have deep roots and that you want a little extra freezing. I have from the looks of it 2 cavites and i need to go this week. Its not to bad just remember it will be over before you know it.
Reply:Sometimes root canals hurt but when i had one it didn't hurt at all.
Reply:it shouldn't hurt at all.

if you get novacaine, you don't feel a thing.
Reply:If you are properly medicated you wont feel a thing.
Reply:Once they shoot you with the novacaine and it numbs the area sufficiently you should be good to go, i.e. no pain. I had a molar done years ago and the whole thing took about 2 hours, so of course, they had to give me another dose of the local anestetic halfway through just to be certain I wouldn't feel a thing. Afterwards you'll want to keep ahead of your pain meds (i.e. take it before it wears off). I made the mistake of napping without taking mine and I was woken up by the second worse pain of my life. It took 30 mins before the prescribed 800mg of Motrin took affect and I was cussing the whole way.

Root canal?

I'm going to have a root canal done next week. It was supposed to be yesterday, but yesterday the dentist just examined my tooth. So any advice? How does it feel to have a root canal? Will it hurt during the root canal? (I hope not, I want a lot of numbing medicine!, lol) Will it hurt afterwards, and if so, for how long?

Root canal?
I was pretty spooked when I needed a root canal (you know, all those jokes over the years, on TV and stuff). But I went to a person who did root canals (endodontist?); and it went smooth.

and I made a best friend in "gas" - they put this on you and you just breathe and you don't care what happens. You're not scared, time seems to go really fast (I thought it was 10-15 minutes and it had been over a n hour); and at the end - they give you a whiff of oxygen and all the effects go away.

and there's no "pain" after (maybe some soreness because your mouth was open for a long time), but since a root canal really means to remove the nerve, there's nothing left to cause you pain.

I had been sensitive, especially to cold and heat, and also to pressure. And the next day - cold Diet Pepsi again - without worries!

Root canals are much faster and easier and less painful than when they made those jokes. It felt no worse than getting a small filling or a tooth cleaning.
Reply:I have had 3 root canals done over the years and the MOST painless one was done by an Endodontist in Mexico... the most PAINFUL one was done by my regular dentist.
Reply:I just had a root canal done a couple of days ago on one of my front teeth. I was extremely nervous about it, but really it wasn't that bad. It doesn't hurt. The only thing that hurt a little was when they had to leave an instrument in my tooth for a couple of minutes to take an X-Ray to check the depth of the canal. It doesn't hurt really bad, more just annoying. The shot for the anesthetic also stings a little, but not that bad. But the whole process was fairly painless, especially if you have a really good dentist. I didn't even feel anything when he was drilling.

It's a little weird and uncomfortable, but not painful. I was a little sore afterward, but the dentist will give you pain medication. They gave me ibuprofen and that works fine. It's not a constant pain, just a little sore once in a while. The dentist said told me it might hurt a little for 2 or 3 days. I'm fine right now. I was able to go back to work and school the next day.

If you have a toothache or any kind of infection (which is usually why you have to get a root canal in the first place), you will have to take antibiotics for a while before they can work on it. That's probably why the dentist just examined the tooth first.

Don't worry, it really isn't that bad. I was scared too, but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

Root Canal....?

Hi,

I just had the final lot of root canal treatment done on thursday, but my dentist only put in a filling on the top, not a crown. Is this normal?

What do I have to be wary of doing now - e.g. can I eat hard foods and brush normally on that tooth? What happens if I somehow break the root canal - is it possible to replace root canals?

Thanks!

Root Canal....?
It's okay to have a normal filling, it's pretty strong. I have it too.

You can normally brush it, but don't be very harsh with it, it maybe sensitive for at least 6 weeks, which is normal, nothing wrong, it's the healing process.

Avoid eating hard foods with it, like apple and nuts, because it can cause breakage, that's what my dentist told me.

The tooth can handle quite a bit still, but is more fragile now.

The dentist only offered me to replace it with a crown after 2 years. and it worked out fine for me that way.

Hope it helps. Good luck.
Reply:i had a root canal and did not get a crown you can eat normal and that kind of thing but you will have to get a crown on it because over time the tooth becomes brittle and will start to fall apart like mine has lol but for now it is fine
Reply:Yes, that is standard practice.

If a crown is put on right away after a root canal and for some reason that tooth starts hurting, a dentist would have to drill through the crown to further work on the tooth (and the money spent on the crown just went down the drain).

That's why you wait a while first to make sure the RCT worked before getting the post + crown.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Be careful. I didn't get my crown for financial reasons, and the tooth broke! Get your crown right away
